Oil cooler

Hi all, I was hoping someone may be able to help me, I`ve just bought a Mercedes G wagon as a project, someone had removed the engine for a rebuild and they`ve sheared off both hose unions on the oil cooler, as you can see from the pics the first one is completely sheared off and the other one has snapped half way, is there anyway new unions could be welded on or is a new oil cooler needed?

Is it steel or ally?, and yes you could grind of the damaged unions and replace with new, best to tig as opposed to mig

I had a long wheel base G wagon for a few years, straight 6,used to drink petrol like it was going out of fashion!!Can't be beaten for build quality, Chassis makes a range rover look like a dinky toy.Diff locks to front and rear like my land cruiser, but the G Wagen's are hydraulic operation.

Hello Richie,

the first looks as if it will come out with some grips. Possibly the second will also, if there is insufficient metal to grasp, try unsweating the boss which will mean less chance of damaging the tank. (From the picture it looks like a copper radiator?)

Thanks for the replies lads, I`m not sure of the material at the moment, I do know its not steel, my next question would be could anyone on here tig or solder the new unions on if (a) I can get any and (b) if I dont manage to find a second hand oil cooler, obviously there will be beer tokens for anyone doing it for me!

Very interesting Gordon, mine is a straight six too, I`ve not had it running yet of course, but that shouldnt be too far away, I must confess I`m a bit confused by all the levers inside tho! By the way mine is a long wheel base too, I need to repair the bottom of the tailgate but thats a project for after its on the road, I`ll try and get some pics up of that

Ally is the most likely suspect, new fitings can be welded or brazed on and can be bought from the likes of Speedflow, Think Automotive, Pace Products and many others but obviously you need to identify what size the fittings are first... AN/JIC tends to be the most popular for aftermarket stuff but i'm guessing that zee Germans would have gone with something metric, probably 1.5mm pitch various diameters used. Assuming something like M14 - M16 size then around a fiver each

Don't mess around and risk ruining beyond repairable. Go to radiator specialist and they will be able to sort out for you. To them doesn't matter if oil or water the technique is the same and an "everyday" job.

^^ Good point, whoever repairs it needs to be able to pressure test it. Oil coolers are typically rated to around 10bar/150psi. I hydro 'em at 11.5/170psi based on the numbers Mocal quote for theirs

Great information hotrodder, I`ll check those out, I need to get new hoses anyway so I`ll be able to get sizes off the fittings on them

Nice one Paul, there is a rad specialist not far from me so I`ll give them a call, do you think its likely that they would have fittings too or would I have to source them myself?

It will be an aluminium cooler and the fittings are metric. Best bet is to find a breaker with a decent used cooler, and hoses if they are damaged.
G wagons have 3 diff locks, front, rear and centre.
