Oil cooler line/hose repair or replace

Aluminium. I had to remove both pipes as I couldn't separate them on the car, join circled below. Was easy enough once in a vice.

Over 10 years ago I had a leak on a power steering flexible on a Volvo 940, took it to the local hydraulics place who immediately asked if it was power steering. They said it was illegal to fabricate power steering flexibles, bear in mind this was in France.

Have you pressurised the pipe to ensure it is the hose and not the end fitting?

No need, it's a known issue, virtually all of them fail within 20 years, mine is an outlier that's got to 22 years. It was also leaking at both ends of the hose.

Jag issued a "technical service bulletin" about it back in ~2006.

Air cooled Porsche’s have similar oil lines going the length of the car at eye watering prices, I know some folks have had hydraulic companies such as Pirtek renew the hoses onto the original fittings.

Pirtek at Norwich have made us up loads of power steering pipes up over the years

That Mitsubishi I done the work on, you could rotate the rubber hose on the metal pipe by hand so it was obvious it was leaking there, these were steel pipes so less risk with crimping them

If you decide to replace the hose without swaging / crimp ends have a look at double wire hose clamps as they may give a uniform pressure over the hose / aluminium pipe.

Pirtek came through, £27.50, and a perfect fit. The car is now back on the road.

I went out for a drive to put it under pressure and check for leaks, was out for 20mins or so. Got back and had a look and feel, to my surprise the pipes and cooler were cold.
Time to dig out the engine manual, it turns out that there is a cooler diverter valve that doesn't open till the oil is at ~105 DegC. Will take it for a longer run tomorrow.
