I was on a health and safety course last week, welding and hot work came up and apparently argon is as toxic as cyanide according to matey doing the course...nothing said about it being an asphyxiant...

But yes, I know loads that cry about fumes on site but then go outside for a lung full of pineapple flavoured steam...

Ignoring the pineapple flavouring, oh that it would be 'steam' and not glycol vapour or something equally undesirable.

Argon is an asphyxiant, as are nitrogen, helium, and other inert gases. It is not toxic "like cyanide". Of the inert gases, xenon has general anaesthetic properties.

I breathed in fumes for years before PAPR and LEV.

Load of nonsense, they won't have been welding with any of the actual toxic stuff nor doing enough to cause any harm during simple demonstrations.

Absolutely pathetic fear mongering from the college staff, if they have been quoted properly.

If you require special training to tell you how to use or position LEVs, you shouldn’t be teaching welding full stop. Braindead clowns performing group demonstrations on the main bench away from extraction, which will be absolutely useless as about 3 of the students will be able to see properly, the rest will just be twiddling their thumbs.

However, knowing how education works- I would hazard a guess that the “teachers” have had a 2 week welding course and then been thrown in at the deep end teaching it themselves

The college our lot go to are quite strict on it.
I went in to observe a lesson and wasn't even allowed in the room with the welding bays without an airfed headshield on.
Teacher is good though, new to teaching, but good industrial experience.

I am much the same at my place, much to the chagrin of the managers trying to do lesson observations when I refuse them access without ppe
