Off to pick up some steel, what would work best?

I need to weld some pegs onto the inside of a steel cabinet which is around 2mm thick. I want them to be 10mm in diameter (or there abouts).

Would I bet better with using solid bar or tube? Or does it make little difference? The pegs don't need to support a massive weight.

The welder I will be using is one of these no gas fluxed wire things.

I would suggest tube if you would like 10mm diameter, otherwise you may need excessive current to weld the 10mm bar.

It will be easier to weld if both parts are roughly the same thickness, so that would be another vote for tube.

I hadn't thought about drilling it. The problem is, the pegs are effectively on the inside of the door, so the welded ends would then be visible from the outside (if I'm picturing it right?). Pegs are to give me hanging storage space in my gun cabinet.

will 2mm steel be strong enough? you could atach the pegs to a strip of steel and fix that across the back of the cabinet

how many pegs, if it is more than 3 or 4 consider using 3 x 25 flat bar, weld the pegs as required to the bar on a bench and bolt the peg strips to the door? Makes the welding much easier.

Why 10mm if they are not carrying any weight ? Make hooks out of 6mm and weld the leg of the hook flat to the door. You are still going to mark the outside welding to the inside, paint will fix that though.

I thought hey would be...I have a suggestion that will make life easier for you with this. I bought some really good quality self adhesive hooks, cost a bit more than I expected and initially thought they would be crap. I have them on the side of my shotgun cabinet and only wanted them to hang my waterproofs on etc but since noticed that 2 together will hold a full cartridge bag of a 100x 34g cartridges, I have another 2 holding my 9lb air rifle off the floor by its sling and then have a few dotted about with camp clothing and all my posh stuff for estate shooting. Got them off eBay and they are a lot easier to mount that welding bits of bar inside.

10mm make a nice contact area for the items, although it doesn't need to be that big if the size of it is causing an issue?

I don't mind marking the outside, it will be repainted. With it being my gun cabinet I'd rather not drill it, although there is nothing against me doing it.

11 pegs in total, and non of them line up with each other. I'll post a pic up if it helps?

As above. Easier to set true and a weld on both sides is gonna be superior.

Maybe just drill a 6mm hole then line pegs up and plug weld. Easy to linish the weld flush and then paint over. Will be the strongest joint you will get I think but may be wrong. I drilled holes in my cabinet around the base and around the top to let air flow through it as I was having problems with damp in there after not thinking and putting a damp gun slip in there to get it out of the way. Now it's all dry I use the holes at the top to hang coat hangers if I need to. Firearms officer didn't mention them last time he came out.

Personally, I'd go with this. Easy, works for BB and less damage/repair touch-up to the cabinet.

If they fall off, you're in no worse a position and it won't have cost you a fortune in time/gas etc. I'm sure BB will post a link if he still has the Seller's info.

hooks for calls and such like? Just get some self adhesive ones from one of the diy places . Failing that make or buy something like a key rack and faten it mechanically with a few M5

The hooks are actually to support some of my guns. I'd rather not use the self adhesive ones, in case they fell off. Any damage caused would far out weigh the time/effort to weld some on. Plus, I fancy a bit of a project

not sure i follow this now...how are you going to support guns on the door of the cabinet? how big is your cabinet and how many gun are you trying to store? i am currently using a 3 gun cbinet and have had (in the past) 2 semi auto, 2 over under, a side by side and an air rifle in there all together.

im not sure steel pins would be the best way to support a gun either, i would go for sticking some of the easilly available foam inerst to the door with some good adhesive and using them although i must say if i was getting to the point again where i was overloading a cabinet and needed to support more guns than it was designed for, i would probably just buy a bigger second hand cabinet

It's not for your traditional 'long guns', its for ones like this.



This cardboard template fits inside my cabinet and kind of shows what I want to achieve. This way I can hang my 4 pistols on the door so they don't crowd my rifles.



And this is where the pins would go to hold them.



Hope that makes more sense now? I have another cabinet, but they aren't build with guns of this type in mind.

In that case I would still go with drill a 6mm hole and plug weld the bars in, but I would get bars that slip into the empty cases, then glue cases into them to look different
