Odd oven behaviour. Ideas?

I havent had a chance to look at this yet. I hope its an issue of the wrong knobs... but just in case I thought I would ask for ideas...

Its a free standing cooker with a double oven. The folk in our cottage are saying that when they turn the fan oven on (bottom oven), the top oven heats up. I would have thought thats impossible but any ideas on wjere to look if it actually turns out to be the case? Most have hefty junction blocks somewhere and I would think this behaviour couldnt happen?!

Oh, and no reported issues before so this has only just occurred.

And apparently when the top oven is turned on the top oven comes on as expected!

Has a seal fallen off/got damaged or something and heat from bottom is getting into top cavity? Does the bottom oven get hot as well or do they genuinely mean the top oven elements are coming on?

They suggest the top oven is getting hot when the bottom os switched on. The other half has had a look and thinks this is right. I cant imagine how though.

Yeah I get that but first thing to decipher is if the top elements are coming on (can’t imagine this would be the case?) or if it’s just heat from bottom coming up into top oven.

If it’s the first then it’s a weird electrical problem, if it’s the second it’s probably something like a seal that’s missing/damaged or something like that.

I'll have a proper look tomorrow but the other half is suggesting the element is coming on in the top oven when the knob is turned on for the bottom fan oven.

I agree - has to be something weird?!

Ah yeah, that sounds very odd…I can’t see how a fault could develop that would cause this, aside from a really odd one.

is the oven new or old - if new I could maybe understand if it was wired incorrectly at factory - even though that would be unlikely - but if it’s been ok for a while it would have to be a really fluke set of circumstances that would cause this??

i suspect its a single switch to control dual oven not seperate switches for both

would i be right in this

if it is i suspect you have a switch fault with the barrel switch

Its quite old so I agree completely. Very odd to see how this fault could occur.

A lot of cookers were wired single wire maybe 1 has sagged shorting out the 2 circcuits

Are there any common wires between the two ovens otherwise it's just heat rising and warming the top oven. Ours is a similar cooker and the top oven is hot enough by convection to heat plates when the bottom fan oven is on.

Are all the grounds good?

instead of wild guesses take the back off and test if any power is going to the elements when switch is off and if so work your way back to the switches

Well. This was an easy fix. Maybe change the title to 'Odd operator behaviour'!! I turned the oven on and it all worked exactly as it should. I really dont know why anyone thought there was a problem. At least it was a cheap 'fix'

thats tennants for you . i went to a washer not working .the digital display was blank turned the dial to wash and pressed the on button and it lit up good job i was there doing the smoke alarms otherwise that would have cost the landlord 50 quid for nothing
