Odd nut thing on steering damper

Some sort of crushable thing? I don't think I've encountered them before?

I'm guessing it works in combination with the other nut as some sort of nyloc substitution?

I'm thinking between the washer and the nut with the face you can see against the washer and the "spikes" against the nut? Is that right?

No. It’s a push nut.

Put it on last. Over the other one like a cap.

I think there's only one direction I can push it on, but then it won't be like a "cap", but the other way round?

Ok, so I've found some snaps... Push on so it's like a crown rather than a cap, right? The outer ridge of the fastener is pointing away from the nut that's to he locked.

I wouldn't be able to push it on otherwise but I didn't know if you were supposed to screw it on or something.

Anyway I'm pretty sure I'm clear on it now. Thank you both.

I think you'll find that @Tinbasherdan & @James1979 are correct.
It should fit like a cap.

Hi, They used to be common before Nyloks especially on shock absorbers, they are a cheap lock nut. They go on like a crown and are screwed down the thread against the full nut, they are usually the same size as the full nut so can be undone with a spanner.

One man’s crown is another man’s cap.

That said a cap would go over something so crown is a better word. I’ll remember that next time.

Either which way I don’t trust them very much. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t like the look of them.
