odb 2 help

i have a 1995 chevy s-10 with 4.3 it has the odb 2 port but i havent been able to find a code reader that will read codes has anyone got any suggestions ???????

Think you will find you need the gm tech2 scanner

i was hoping for a cheaper option is their a hack for the tech 2?

Any OBD2 reader should be able to read the generic codes from the engine management.

Beyond engine management, you'll need something manufacturer compatible, which I have no idea what Chevrolet would have used in the US at the time.
Tech2 was certainly the EU tool at the time, but I have no idea if it got used outside Europe.

The big issue you'll find, is diagnostic kit for vehicles of that era can be pretty limited. Not many non-manufacturer tools were available at the time (or for a while after), and those that have been developed since, have probably made the decision not to support old vehicles due to the limited use.

Opcom is for EU models.
Chevrolet didn't exist in the UK in the 90s, and IIRC the first EU models were essentially rebranded Daewoo's after GM bought Daewoo.

If you don't know anyone with tech2, the Chinese clones fill the gap. Most tend to work ok.

Your socket is not obd2, not invented yet, but looks similar. Therefore Obd2 scanner will not read

Just had to check that, as OBD existed in the US before EU.
OBD2 became mandatory in the US in 1996, so the standard would have existed for a few years before that.
Most manufacturer's would have likely added it in the years preceding that as models got redesigned/updated, rather than suddenly introduce it to everything at the latest possible moment.

This lists the basic dates, but IIRC the EU dates aren't entirely correct - OBD2 Explained - A Simple Intro (2021) (csselectronics.com)
IIRC in the EU, those were the dates for anything with a new type approval, but there was some leeway for existing models. IIRC existing diesel models had up to 2006 to fully implement EOBD.

My understanding was that OBD was introduced , as a standard across the industry , because every manufacturer had their own software and protocols, previously.
