Obtaining ISO standard publications?

What's the best method for obtaining ISO standards, i.e the ones which pertain to welding. The ISO website seems to sell some, although at £144 each. I've also had a look at the BSI and TWII websites without any luck finding better sources or cheaper options.

Thought I'd check in here before ordering in case there is a more straightforward/cheaper option rather than ordering publications from ISO direct. I'm after ISO or EN standards, most resources I've found online cover the AWS standards and it seems there are some key differences, so I'm looking for an ISO standard document that I can use for reference without ending up mixing up ISO and AWS.

If you know someone that is a member of BSI they can get them for half price, some trade associations have a membership. Otherwise it is a cartel, even for online access the prices are eye watering.

BSI members get a big discount...50% I seem to recall....I used to be a member but not any longer......The majority of BSIs income is from documents relating to welding so they keep it close to their chests and anyone copying is liable....ive seen some documents on the internet that are downloadable but they are based abroad and im not sure of their accuracy.
Im afraid if you need them youve got to pay

I have free access from work to all ISO British and EN standards

We have to sign an agreement that they will not be shared, donated etc. Things are very tightly controlled by BSI

Every time I down load a copy it automatically makes a watermark with my name, department, team and employee number

Didn't think of that actually. I'll try that, it'll be nice to have a copy to hand, but my priority is to study them as much as possible and if I can do that for the cost of a few cups of coffee at the library, that's a good option.

Yeah I looked into joining briefly, but doesn't seem to be aimed at individuals wanting to learn as opposed to large organisations and government departments.

Yup; I spent some time last night making flash cards of notes on some stuff, only to then find it out that methodology differs from ISO. A lot of stuff online seems to be the USA; AWS standard, and I'm assuming being in the UK, it is really the EN/ISO standards that I need to dedicate the majority of my time to.

Well at least now I know; would have hate to have paid in full to find out a week later there is a much cheaper way to get them.

I can get British Standards through Gas Safe, dont think I could get ISO standards though

personally I would focus on getting some trigger time and practicing laying down some beads.

Worry about any standards much latter on. In my experience they are very complex technical documents that require a lot of interpretation and often create more confusion than provide clarification for the novice.

Perhaps some of our experienced members could share their experience

I’ll give you an example, BS4142 is a standard I work with from time to time. I have more than enough relevant qualifications and 30 years experience in the subject it deals with.

It’s so complicated to read, understand and follow it makes me want to bang my head against a brick wall each time it has to come out

I used to be on some BSI committees that produce the standards...they are written to standardise the subject.....there is absolutely no educational content....you need to understand the subject or the Standard is just nonsense.
