Oak and wire wool don’t go well together, the tannins will react with any fragments left behind. Stainless wire wool might be OK, but scotch-brite works great.

Sounds like despite the weight they are veneered doors. I have some scotchbrite pads here so i'll have an exploratory rub on the back of one.
rub it on the hinge side where its not seen unless its wide open

Mmm rusty wood, not a good combination...I was thinking he may end up with a rusty looking door if using wire wool.

As I have finished and refinished a lot of oak items, I never had a problem with it. Would only be a problem if it was not sanded and cleaned before using water based products.
Scotchbrite is fairly ineffective on bare wood, and if used with any sort of thinners, can leave its colour behind.

Wood, oils, and polyurethane all darken or yellow with age. If I'm using a wood that I dont want to darken, like yew or laburnum I think you have to seal the wood so it doesn't oxidise. I had a good go with 3M brown Scotchbrite hand pads. Hell of a job to try getting through the Osmo. It does lighten it, but because of the slightly raised grain of the veneer/door it is patchy. Needs sanding really.
