Nylon 3D Printing Favour

Is there someone on here with a 3D printer and some nylon filament who might do me a favour in exchange for beer tokens?

I'm after the two fence slider parts (GTS10_FenceSlider and GTS10_FenceSlider_Window) from this thingiverse page: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3813720 - I can make the bearing cores on the lathe easily so I don't need them.

There's some blurb on the page about print settings (dense infill, 0.2mm resolution) which I guess will increase the print time and material use, but I don't know a lot about these things!

That would be my fall-back option, but it's likely to result in a lot more friction in the slot it runs in. If I can't find anyone who can print in something slidey, then I guess I'll have to go with PLA. I don't really know how common the different materials are to be honest.

If PLA doesn't suit I pretty much print all the time in ABS

I've just done some googling and found this table of coefficients of friction here:

So it looks like ABS is a lot better than PLA (assuming the worst value for PLA in that table) and Nylon is a lot better again. Having said that, from some of the links on the page I got this from, it looks like measurements vary wildly even for the ones with a single value in that table!

Is nylon a material that relatively few 3D printers can take?

Nylon needs a beefy machine to print, the temps involved is very difficult for the home user to achieve without significant upgrades or an expensive machine.

I do have a roll of PETG but I haven't had a play with it yet and from that chart PETG would be even better than nylon.

They look simple enough to mill? POM is nice to mill If it could be 2 parts bolted I have some big enough

I'd wondered about milling them out of acetal, I just don't have any acetal of a vaguely suitable size.

Worth sending this guy a message he frequently lists large offcuts. I have about 6kg of it, my thickest is 28mm, but if it can be two parts it would work.

Could you make a 3d print in pla (or whatever) undersized then fit some nylon or teflon plates into recessed areas on the sliding surfaces?

I could have a go for you, would take me a day or 3 to dial it in. You could have the parts for cost of postage as i doubt they will use much plastic judging by the size of them.

It's a fairly small thing that provides a running surface, so I'm a bit wary about making it out of two parts. That's a useful link though, so thanks for that! As for flycutting large steel plates, I'm not sure I would be able to (my mill is only little!)

I think it would be quite fiddly due to the small size of the slots. Interesting idea though.

Thanks. In a few days I should have the cabinet done which should stabilise temperatures a bit more. We'll see how that goes and I'll come back to you. Cheers.

PETG prints well at home and can make proper usable parts.

The Parts:



Translucent red PETG .

Extruder 248C

Bed 70C

Z offset +0.15mm (very important with PETG to calibrate and set this, you need a very small air gap between the first layer and the nozzle or it will pull the first layer off and you just end up with a big blob of plastic on the extruder.)

It prints similarly to ABS but with a lower bed temp.
