i understood that the head size & spanner length was designed to give the correct tightness before torque wrenches came into use, BSF being a finer thread than Whitworth, pulled up tighter for the same torque, therefore a smaller head was fitted so a shorter spanner was used. I'm not sure about the wartime thing, it goes back much further than that.Hi, you're confusing thread sizes with spanner sizes. Whitworth and BSF used to have the same head size but BSF head sizes were reduced during the war to save metal. AF is the head size of UNF/UNC thread, i.e. 5/16" thread has 1/2" head size.
