ive done work loading stuff at auction and a lot of the massive stuff doesnt sell purely becasue of the cost of transport...i loaded out a massive hydrailuc press, thing weighted 65 ton as it sat and a few bits had been removed at that point...they had to spend 3k on a crane and lift plan, then another few grand in transport to get it home and then another 3ish grand on a crane the other end to unload, plus a team of guys to instal it.Many moons ago I was at an MOD auction, there was a monster lathe there with what must have been a 40’ bed on it, had a chair on the tool post. This thing was hydraulically operated through a ticatape reader. God only knows what its original purpose was, never even made the starting bid of £500.

Which steel mill ?I spent about 9 months working at a steel mill in Pittsburgh Pa.Some how My boss knew I was a gear head and took My into the bowels of the mill and We went up a story and looked out of a small window about 1 foot square in a wall with a piece of steel turning in it. I could not see over or under it. I asked what was it? Boss told Me it was a big casting that was 6" too big to go through a rail road tunnel. Some one scoped out out the transport job and missed it by 6". The train got to the last tunnel 15 miles away and had to reverse and bring it back to have 6" turned off.
Yep - it was used for a few years, 6" off the ground at the back of the garden where it was deliveredWatching the lathe being expertly extracted from the container prompted me to ask:
Did that pizza oven ever get extracted?

There’s a milling machine of a similar size still in use in the shipyard. About the size of a reasonable 3 bed houseMany moons ago I was at an MOD auction, there was a monster lathe there with what must have been a 40’ bed on it, had a chair on the tool post. Ive worked in the Hyundai shipyard in Korea a couple of times, the tail shaft lathes and the building of the big 2 stroke crank shafts is interesting. There’s a milling machine of a similar size still in use in the shipyard. About the size of a reasonable 3 bed house
