Can anyone suggest why i keep getting a lot of brown stain? I am working in a garage and have a 2 guage reg. even at reg saying 20lph i still get it.

If i turn wire speed down its like it s burning before hitting metal, amps up and too hot for metal.

Could it be that the nice "new" steel you are using has a protective oil type coating on it? I ahve some steel that I have had for about 10 years and it must have had a coating on it cos apart from the edges that got damp (1/2") most are still unrusted !! Would have liked to get some of the coating cos it seams to work well but company now gone (they made filing cabinets) and yesy it is plain ms not galv or zintec

try reducing your gas to say 10lpm and work up the way

I tried from 10 lpm to 20 lpm and seemed to make little difference. There is gas coming out the nozzle as I can feel and hear it if put hand over. The steel is new however and may well have a coating so will try grinding that back more,

You may not need to "grind" the new steel but just a wipe over with a solvent (but don't use brake disc cleaner as from what I have read on here it produces nasty gases when welded if I recall). If you think about it the new steel has been stored somewhere for several days if not weeks since it was produced and yet it is still shiney! When you start to cleanup some still ready for welding and happen not to use all of it then turn your back and before you know it there is surface rust!! So that's why I think the steel has a coating.

Agree with mike here with regards to removing the factory finish from the sheet metal.
I found a remarkable difference when I took a dremmel to the faces on and around the welded area, seemed to work even better with a mini grinding wheel fitted as opposed to a emery wheel.
seemed to get a real fresh clean weld.

easy test,

if you cant see fingerprint marks on it from were you handeld it yesterday it has a coating of some form on it.

shiney untreated sheet fingerprints will show as rusty marks in hours

try over lapping the beads over and over again then once you have got the torch control start with a butt weld and t joints, then vertical and horizontal then once you are confident with them, then try over head if you want help just ask, please get some good steel you have to be pretty skilled to weld with very low amps and make it look good without grinding it off
