Not been asked overtime again

So I work in a busy workshop Monday to Friday. I’ve been there for around 5 months now and without fail me and the rest of the shop get asked about wanting to work a Saturday morning come late Friday afternoon. Sometimes I’ll work it sometimes I can’t do it but I normally do them quite frequently.

But recently I’ve not been getting asked whilst everyone else has. I just find it strange as I can’t think of any reason why as my work rate and quality is up to standard. I haven’t got on the wrong side of my supervisor or manager in any shape or form either.

I have been told he sometimes forgets but this is third week I’ve not been asked and I’m started to get a bit paranoid as to why. Is this a bad omen?

Ask nicely if there's any chance of some OT. At least you'll maybe get the lie of the land.

Better to front it early on than let it eat you up or you'll end a vindictive old git , plotting nasties and at risk of going postal.

you do when and as your able ? not every time

they are just going to the people that do it every time ? if i was an employer id try to keep the people that do it every time and then add you in when i can as i could not afford to **** the people off that helped out every time it needed

sorry to say that could be the way this only a thought as we would need a lot more info to come to an educated guess

It could well be this, when there were loads more of us at work if I needed someone to cover my standby or some OT that I couldn't do I always rang the people most likely to say yes first. I rarely had to make more than 3 calls and back then there were 20+ of us so there were probably 15 people who I would never call.

Not sure there’s a guy there who don’t more OT than me and has had more days off than Santa Clause yet he still got asked.

Before you get yourself stressed and paranoid I would just ask the question.

I had the same when I worked in a machine shop in the 80's. I liked a bit of overtime, but I also liked to go on weekend bike rallies occasionally. My foreman would get hump with me if I missed a Saturday morning, and not ask me in for weeks at a time after.

One day the big boss, the owner, asked why I never did Saturdays....so I told him. No problems after that.

The foreman himself was one of these weirdos that believe we live to work, and was totally flummoxed if someone ever chose not to do overtime when asked..

Good point, asking why you've been left out is a bit accusational. Letting someone know you are available is a good first step.

Known a few who near enough have -enjoyed their work, enjoyed passing on experience and knowledge to the younger generation, so kept on coming.

if you want overtime ask for it at start of the week or closer to the friday asking time

no point asking why your being left out

if your left out then they maybe something there but since you have asked for it and have put yourself out to do it i cant see why they would refuse you in doing it

When I was young there were two of us younguns, and we both got asked to do ot all the time, other lad was always saying hes got to ring wife/get childminder/aunty this or that, in the end boss stopped asking him as when he asked me I just said yes every time, now many workshops later I dont want to do 40 hrs never mind ot!

Every single day my work call me to work extra hours or extra days. And i do mean they call me Every. Single. Day.

I wish they wouldn't.

If you want the extra hours, just ask. They'll either say yes or no, if it's no you'll sure find out why.

Just say 'do yo want me to come in and do xx on Saturday?'
Some places get to a point where its just expected, and you don't get asked, same as o/t through the week.
Might be worth asking what the score is.


I rarely get asked anymore, he usually knows what the answer will be, but that suits me. I try and avoid Fridays too, tbh. Actually doing a Saturday this week, as they want a forks driver.
I don't mind doing them if there's something specific that needs to be done, just can't be doing with just working every Saturday for extra hours.

A previous place used to require you to do some overtime in the week before asking you to come in on a weekend.

Another place, work used to take place really slow, so you were sure to be asked to come in to work overtime in an attempt to meet deadlines . . . newbies starting and working at normal rate, ie double the speed of anyone else, would be taken to one side by the shop steward and had words with . . . I'm still not keen on union bods . . . especially those stuck in the 70's mind set.

As for me - contract says something along the lines of all duties and hours required to complete the task - so no overtime.
