Until I worked in the prisons, I had no idea about any of it until I remarked on the awful sickly sweet smell. The I was told that "we ignore it because it keeps the inmates quiet". That was the beginning of my understanding about why people are not scared of imprisonment.

I grew up in the 60's in a mill-town in West Yorkshire; sex & drugs & rock & roll just didn't exist. My sister was listening to Lonnie Donegan.

The lads from Teesside might remember from the mid 90's a Dodge Viper in red, we had that on NOS too and the only reason we didn't log 200mph in it was we didn't have the bottle to shift up at 180, the thing was a bit "unstable" and required both hands on the wheel.


And no regrets at all, it was fabulous!


There is a great deal more to this than you may imagine.

I recall a red Dodge Viper, guy who owned it was the daddy of all the local club bouncers...?

Baffles me completely. Why not just slash an artery or something, result is potentially the same?

Enlighten me... How can the wilful ingestion of toxic substances be regarded as "pleasure" unless one is already mentally deficient? Just WHY do some people actively pursue the feeling of "drunkeness / drug high" or whatever? It happened to me when I was sixteen, from someone adding stuff to my drink and I can still recall the feeling to this day of being paralysed, lying on the front doorstep yet fully concious. Never EVER would I want that feeling again.

No pretence. That event when I was 16 taught me all I needed to know about alcohol and the feeling of not being in control of my own body which I loathed. Since then I have rarely drunk any alcohol and as I have said in other threads, my Christmas bottle of Port is often still half full the following year.
I enjoyed driving greatly and was always on my 'bike so couldn't drink anyway and it became a habit.
If I go out to dinner, I may have half a pint of Gnat's which will last me all evening as I have no tolerance to any more, even if I wanted more.

As for drugs, come on... That really is a strange thing to do and nobody in my social circle had anything to do with them. We heard references to the Beatles et al taking "substances" but we all thought that to be so far fetched it couldn't be true. You may recall my saying earlier that my first experience of anything was working in the prison where I had to ask what the terrible sickly smell was. I had no idea and I then started having to understand them.

Same with the more common drug, nicotine, the government wail and cry about how dangerous it is, warnings everywhere, post horrendous pictures on every packet.... yet still they sell the stuff.

Going by the 2002 figure, I suspect more people have died in TODAY, from alcohol related issues, in the UK alone, than in the whole of UK history from nitrous.

I mean, ive not looked it up, but approx 9000 per year is, very roughly, 30 a day. I doubt nitrous has done for that many people?

I think alcohol is a filthy drug. I still wouldn't ban it. Nitrous is a whole world apart in safety, impact on society, etc etc and yet some joker has seen fit to knee jerk it in to illegality.

More worryingly, if someone invents a totally safe, non-addictive drug incapable of causing an overdose or any dependence, that people enjoy without it causing them any problems, under the Psychoactive Substances Act it's instantly illegal, with no thought of whether any harm can be caused. This stinks of a denial of the pursuit of happiness, purely for purposes of control of what people do *inside their own heads*.
Strangely "poppers*" (which anyoone who has used them will tell you *are* psychoactive, if only in the boost to the libido - apparently a "side effect" as they don't directly act on the brain) were exempted after lobbying by, among others, a gay Conservative MP.

*which ARE dangerous in combination with common medicines, e.g. antihypertensives for blood pressure control, viagra etc. for their purposes.

Of course it is and so is no more interesting to me than any other drug. The amount of alcohol that I consume is really tiny, both per occasion and per annum. My Port is really the only alcohol I would drink and only then in very small amounts. If there were an alcohol free version, I would be greatly interested.

I appreciate that I am in the minority here, but I just don't understand why anyone would deliberately consume enough to be affected by it.

Because it feels good. What's so hard to grasp about that? If it made people feel bad then the whole concept would have died out years ago, millennia ago. But like everything, moderation is the key.

When i worked the doors 40 years ago there was never anyone threw out, or not let in for being aggressive on weed...Since then i have never seen anyone wanting trouble or being violent on Cannabis. I don't smoke it and never have but i would rather be conversing with a person having a joint than drinking beer all day long.

The question you gotta be asking yourselves is:

Why is the wine and beer isle in your local supermarket - three/four times longer than the caned food isle?

Why is 14.7% of the population on prescription antidepressant drugs (google it - that shocked me)?

Why is the illegal supply of drugs in the UK is estimated to be worth £9.4bn (billions per year)

This is 100% in line with my own, prior, comment about when I worked for the clubs.

Coke turns people into arrogant bores, but you're unlikely to get someone on coke commit entirely random violence, as, whilst they're all full of ego, at least they still have some sense about them. The same can't be said of (some of) those high on ethanol.


I've never seen anyone on MDMA with even a hint of violence about them!

I live in a quiet town in NI and still can smell weed EVERY time I am out cutting the grass etc. (Pun not intended)

Out walking the pooch I smell it too. Seen 2 middle aged women smoking what must have been a "joint" on a public footpath in plain view outside a supermarket. I know nothing of these things but find it amazing the brazen types out there who the police walk past. I've also smelled it from the open window of cars in front of me in mornings on motorway etc! Only one person driving so it was them smoking.

I had never smelled weed in my life until in California about 5 years ago. Here is now about the same.

Wife was in New York earlier in the year, where weed is now legal, and she said it was like something out of a futuristic dystopian movie: weed shops on every corner (where we have vape shops over here), people standing outside doorways smoking it, and a perpetual stink of the stuff, even in bars and restaurants.
