In 2020 there were 3 deaths associated with nitrous oxide in the UK.

In 2020, there were 8,974 deaths from alcohol-specific causes registered in the UK.

(these are numbers from the UK govt website)


I do wonder if something else would not be more deserving of legislation.

I live in a quiet town in NI and still can smell weed EVERY time I am out cutting the grass etc. (Pun not intended)

Out walking the pooch I smell it too. Seen 2 middle aged women smoking what must have been a "joint" on a public footpath in plain view outside a supermarket. I know nothing of these things but find it amazing the brazen types out there who the police walk past. I've also smelled it from the open window of cars in front of me in mornings on motorway etc! Only one person driving so it was them smoking.

I had never smelled weed in my life until in California about 5 years ago. Here is now about the same.

I think the nitrous car guys may be able to continue. If the suppliers add just a low concentration of certain sulfur compounds to it, they can make it smell too bad for recreational use, but have no effect on the engine.

There was a doctor out in the States who carried out experiments having depressed people breath mixtures of oxygen and nitrous and claimed it got good results. The work got published but never followed up. I suspect that was because it could not be patented, so no profits? However, there is a medical problem with nitrous in that continued use causes some kind of vitamin defficency.
