Norwegian gas pipeline

Has anyone seen the engineering program on Quest about the Norwegian undersea gas pipeline project ?
The pipe welding equipment is epic !! From the ship the pipe is laid from they weld as they go !!
One machine preps the pipe , then it goes onto a continuous line to be welded & inspected.
Was amazing to watch.

I had to watch the programme a second time to fully appreciate the scale of the the endeavour; what a wonderful project.

Seems strange that they use two different sorts of weld on the pipes.
First they join two 12m sections together using a submerged arc process whilst rotating the pipes. Then they join that 24m section onto the end of the outgoing string using a rotating arc machine. Obviously can't rotate the 1200km long pipe.

Anyone any ideas on the second weld process and why they've adopted different ones.

Impressed that they have time to do all the above and still do visual and ultrasonic weld tests before it passes out the ship and into the depths of the North sea.

Can't remember the name of the pipe but it definately fed into Easington and yes the pipe laying vessel was the LB200.

Don't suppose you know the reasoning behind the two different weld processes?

The spooler system uses MIG but its a process developed by an outfit called Serimer (now Serimax) which welds at incredible speed. The other process is Submerged arc which is quick but not as quick as the Mig (in this case).
