Hi andy28 I might be wrong but I thought all discs only had one metal ring but I’m sure some one will be along soon who will be able to let you know for definite Graham.

Most discs I've used only have the metal ring on one side only

because when you tighten the locking ring up it grips on the stone and the disk slightly turns on the metal ring. it centralises the disk as well. if it wasn't there tightening and undoing the disk would grind the arbour and lock ring away

I’ve often wondered why there’s only one ring. Now you’ve explained why it makes perfect sense thanks. I’m always amazed how much people on the forum know

Hmm, which way is the metal ring supposed to go? Towards the nut, or away from it?

    Don't assume anything.
There was a long debate on this forum when someone asked that question with reference to the "flat" thin cutting discs
