Norbar torque wrench problem

I wonder if you watched everything on there back to back how long it would take?!

It is useful. I like where you get a break down of where the different scenes are. That saves a ton of time

I love youtube. So many great videos. But sometimes it's quicker to get stuck in and have a fiddle.

Not everyone is blessed with having every appropriate tool for every occasion. As it happens I do have a wide selection but I appreciate the fact that very often for people 'needs must'. Applying your sensibilities to the wider population is fine but please, don't start implying stuff like I have zero respect for my tools because there's a long, long list of evidence right here on the forum that demonstrates otherwise.

If you use a torque wrench as a breaker bar then you have zero respect for that tool. I'd also add you'd have zero understanding of said tool too.

Anyway, after 13 years of being on here, and trying to help again and getting picked at for doing so, then I shall just log out for good.

Snap on and Halfords Pro are supposed to be quite good!

Snap-on own Norbar now and have done for a few years, talking to the calibration test guy last I had a wrench tested, he said Norbars quality has decreased, in his opinion...

It doesn't help criticising people's lack of knowledge. I have never taken a torque wrench apart I admit and yes I should have been more careful but I think I have a huge amount of respect for most of my tools. Especially my lathes and mills etc.
Life is far too difficult to get stressed over a torque wrench

Plenty of people have said I am an idiot for breaking it but nobody has mentioned how to take one apart!

Grind the rivets out if you are lucky the arms are dislodged

That's your choice. I wasn't trying to provoke an argument just offering a different perspective. You're the one that started getting personal.

You should be able to disagree with someone without making a row out of it and getting personal is a last-resort tactic that lessens you in the eyes of the observer.

Yes they do quite a variety. Mine is 80s vintage. Bought it new. They did one 8 foot long for Wessex helicopter main rotors. Bet they weren't cheap.

The market is flooded with as new s/h norbars at very reasonable prices, pretty sure most of those for sale have been liberated from former employers.
Picked up this 1000nm norbar off the bay of thieves for a fraction of the new price, still in calibration.

We bought a Snap-on 3/4 breaker bar for undoing 240nm+ wheel bolts, has a bit of flex but you know your near undoing it at that point.

Personally I would never undo with a torque wrench, torquing a left hand thread bolt to a known value is a different kettle of fish entirely.

Just bought the Snap-on 1/2 inch rachet for bigger stuff at home, same size as a breaker bar, have the 3/8 as well.

I have a 3/4" bar too and a big old 3/4" ratchet. Somehow tight things seem easier to remove with that chunky bar than with the same length 1/2" one.

Has anyone ever bothered to get their wrenchs calibrated? I've got a lovely old Britool one that's about a 600mm long but it's clearly off it's calibration, not sure if they can be adjusted or if it's a replace it job once they're past being accurate?

A quick check against another is the most I’ve done. I’ve worked in places (generally aerospace/nuclear but there’s plenty of others that would need it) where they would be done on a regular basis. Bit ott for home use though!

place a known weight at a know distance on the handle is the simplest solution to calibrating them at home

For a lot of applications using a torque wrench is just as much about bolts being equal than hitting an exact value.

I had a good chat with a technical chap at Norbar before I bought a couple of mine, he said if looked after theirs will stay in calibration for a very long time, their statement says 5000 operations. Some industries require traceability so tools have to be checked on a regular basis.

Years ago I had someone strip, clean and calibrate a snap on torque wrench that I own, it had been left on 90lbf for about 15 years(wheel nut setting) so I thought I should get it checked. Turned out it was very nearly spot on anyway.

Anyone who does industrial supplies or engineering supplies can usually do it or organise it.

I send mine to Dingbro in Aberdeen annually. They send them somewhere and they come back with a sticker and a bit of paper

Yesterday I was thinking about this thread and it got me to wondering just how accurate my torque wrenches are so I thought I'd do some testing.

Of the six I own I picked out four which are all 1/2" drive.

A nearly-new Norbar which goes up to 30lbs/ft
An Laser which goes from 15-100-odd lbs/ft which is my usual one to use for any work
A Draper which is getting on but which I had sent for calibration when I had to torque some M12 x 1.25mm bolts to 70lbs/ft in cast ally.
A really old Gordon which was old when my Grandad owned it and he's been dead since 2004.

The Gordon had been knocking around in my works van for years and severely abused as it was so old I never thought to use it as a torque wrench a sI have several others similar. It's always been a big old ratchet spanner for doing drive wheel bolts on concrete saws etc.

Anyway, the Gordon was the push-through type so I pushed the drive square out of it set it for 30 foot pounds and stuck it in my vice (I can hear people cringing already and I don't give a damn). I set the other three each in turn to 30lbs/ft and put the drive square in the hole on the old Gordon torque wrench, pulled on them all in turn and all of them clicked off at the 30 foot pounds the Gordon was set to. So it seems that not only do all of my three 'good' torque wrenches all agree with each other but the years of neglect and abuse and rattling around in a dusty van toolbox had not affected the calibration of that old 1970's-ish tool in the slightest.
