Norbar torque wrench problem

Might be worth speaking to Norbar - I found them to be quite helpful. I had an issue with my clear handles going cloudy (decades out of warranty), apparently a known issue - they couldn't do much about it but did offer a discount on their new version - I didn't bother as I can live with it.

They do say you can use them to undo, providing you don't exceed maximum torque, and obviously they can be used in reverse although not necessarily calibrated for it. I'd always use a breaker bar out of choice though.

It was only about 160ft lbs.

Off topic but I acquired one of those cheap and nasty 1/2" torque wrenches from toolstation or such like, that someone was chucking out.

I wouldn't use it as a torque wrench but it makes a great big 1/2" ratchet and it seems to be almost indestructible.

I'm not arguing that it's not the correct tool - it certainly isn't. But "never ever" suggests under no circumstances, as if using it once will ruin it never to work properly again and that simply isn't true. If you need a bit of leverage an there's nothing else to hand, it might be your only option.

So sorry, but "never ever" is correct unless you either like wasting money or have zero respect for your tools.

Why use a torque wrench for undoing bolts? That's what a breaker bar is for

I use one to undo bolts quite often in internal guts of things where torque specs do not exist!

I use the correct tool for the job!

We have all been there and done it at some point, lost count of the number of breaker bars I have wrecked by not going up a drive size.It’s normally a long and shameful walk back to the box for the right one.

What would that be?

For undoing nuts and bolts, a spanner, a breaker bar, for speed a ratchet or an electric wrench.

If you want to use your torque wrench incorrectly then that's your choice, but I'm advising the Original Poster after he's broken his how not to break or misuse another.

Yes they do quite a variety. Mine is 80s vintage. Bought it new. They did one 8 foot long for Wessex helicopter main rotors. Bet they weren't cheap.

Not everyone is blessed with having every appropriate tool for every occasion. As it happens I do have a wide selection but I appreciate the fact that very often for people 'needs must'. Applying your sensibilities to the wider population is fine but please, don't start implying stuff like I have zero respect for my tools because there's a long, long list of evidence right here on the forum that demonstrates otherwise.

The bigger norbars get in a strop if you use them **** about face, which makes the pivot fail scrapping the wrench.
