OK, I just got back from an 8 hour round trip to pick up the buggy. I'm now the proud owner of a soon to be bastardised stainless steel kite buggy.
I'm going to try and make contact with some welders and metal workers near me and see if they're willing/able to get involved.
I know nothing about this stuff at all, what sort of welding is going to be involved, should I be insistent on mig welding? How much does steel cost? What type of metal should I be making sure is being used on the project?
Am I going to get laughed at if I just turn up somewhere without any plans?

Having put the buggy together to take a look at things before I tip up at a welders to give them the vaguest of instructions I thought I'd post some pics and ask for some more advice, again.
Behold, THE buggy;
I've worked out how much I need to extend the neck by so that it's longer than my legs, allowing them to be supported separately from the front wheel. Just wondered what any of you would suggest for extending it, either keeping the neck as one straight extension as it is now only a bit longer, or making it more of a swanneck, que crappy illustrations:

Hi in both cases you have changed the trail of the forks. you will need to keep the steering geometry the same as the standard buggy as we can assume that works!
In your case though you could gain by changing the trail - either more trail to make the buggy want to self center (which will need more force to steer) or less trail which will make it "want" to turn (which needs less force to turn) - but you will loose the self centering effect. I would keep the headstock angle the same and make up an bolt in section to start with to try the different options. cheers

Hi Andy
You just need to find somebody in the area that can Tig weld stainless. I'd suggest that you'd be better off with a small company (one man perhaps) that is happy to play with a new project. Most welders are pretty versatile and poractical blokes and we have no problem working to working to some sketches. Best bet would be to show them the buggy and a few sketches and photos you've picked up and take it from there. You'll get an idea of the sort of person you are dealing with from the initial chat over the phone.
Pauls comment is very important. Keep the headstock angle as it is now (measure the angle between the forks and the ground before you do anything and make sure that is what you end up with after the modifications).
You can make changes later if you feel they may help but start with something that is tried and test.
I can't comment on prices as I only buy the stuff in small amounts for my projects but the pros here should be able to give you a better idea.
Most importantly keep us posted and do let us know if you can't find somebody nearby. I'm sure that the members here will be able to help track somebody down.
