I did a call around using the yellow pages a few weeks back for prices and it varies depending on who you talk to. I assume, due to the fact the prices are always fluctuating and that scrap merchants like to get their monies worth, keeping the customer in ignorance works in their favour.

Shearings is the better price, rather than straight mixed light, It changes daily at the moment so you can only really do the deal on the day, In the foot and mouth year I was involved in the destruction of some of the plant on a swill feading unit, we were a month solid cutting cast 1/4x 4" and 6" pipes, spliting them then skiping them in 40 yards bins to the scrapy, that was when scrap was at £2.50KG because we could load over 10ton a skip, they didnt charge us to take it, times have changed hey...
I noticed that the price of scrap lead has increased the activity of sticky fingers... We have a Cheshire home near us with an ancient wall round the property. The top cap of bricks sat on a layer of lead coursing - until some little b*stard one night knocked of the capping to pinch the lead - fortunately our community are quite well heeled and a group has got together to pay for the repair of the wall.

The theiving sods have even started to nick copper cables from the railway signals now here. £2750/ton apparently in some palces for copper at the moment.
Heard on the radio today aswell, started nicking kids play equiptment, stainless steel slides etc.

I blame a lot of the thieving on scrap dealers willing to take pretty much anything, no question asked. 
If it wasn't so easy to get paid good money for 'dubiously sourced' materials then there wouldn't be such an incentive for people to steal it in the first place

They've been doing that up here for ages. They even nick live gas pipes and strip out live electricity substations.

Wow... scrap prices are really shootin' up !
Good job I'm rifling thru the skip every night after the builders have finished
at our new house - got quite a collection of lead and copper.
With copper over £3000/ton, anyone got a piggy-bank full of older 1P and 2P's ?
(not the new ones which are mostly steel)
With a 2P piece weighing in at just over 7gramms, a ton of 'em would be about
140000 coins - that's only 2,800 quids worth.
Inflation? yeh, money's worth more as scrap
