Maybe look at other quieter cutting options than a grinder for cutting sheet and do away with part of the problem? Out of sound is out of mind. Any manual method of cutting material will save noise and cost. I have noisy neighbour, BAA! Rolls Royce and General Electric have improved the noise somewhat since 1965.

Here Mr Fuzzy, I'm retired & can & do make as much noise as anyone else! I know what you mean though, it's not an age thing, round hear the poor young things complain on faceache about light aircraft going over, anything that makes a noise, roadworks the lot. If I hear an aircraft, I look up to see what it is, as long as it doesn't disturb my sleep, that's ok.

I stayed in an hotel in Kensington back in April. Quite a posh place. Couldn't sleep due to the constant spooling up and down of a gas turbine. The building opposite runs a combined heat power unit. I complained to management and nobody seemed to know anything about it! You would think planning applications would have to be made and noise would be a part of that?
And then people complain about a bit of grinding!

chances are the council will 'investigate' by wondering round a couple of times and seeing how bad the noise is. My father was reported last year for running a garage from home. He lives up a dead end street, so it has to have been one of the neighbours. It is true that we are often working on cars, but the fact that seemed to be completely missed was that each and evey single one was registered to him. (he's retired, doesnt and never has worked on or sold cars for a living, although he does quite like buying them!!) He phoned the council to explain this, and they basically said 'dont worry, we've only sent you a letter as someones complained, we visited a couple of times and its clear that youre not running a business from there anyway'.......

Interestingly, there is no rules that im aware of that stop you helping your friends out..... if a lot of your 'friends' need theyre cars welding up, then so be it......

Two days after we moved into our new house, we had a little get together, ended up with about 15 or so cars on the drive/lawn/surrounding areas. The next morning the chap over the road came rushing over to me and mentioned all the parked cars everywhere...... I kinda thought, oh great, just what i need with a hangover, here we go...... he says to me, 'we've only got one car, and a decent sized drive, so if you ever need to park any more, youre very welcome to park on our drive'........ i just kinda stood there, expecting to have to go into full defensive mode, and instead got completely thrown by his comments...... nice guy!! Actually all my neighbours are fantastic tbh, theyre mostly retired, occasionally can be seen twitching curtains, but theyre all very friendly, and none of them have ever complained about anything!

I ran a hire business from my house cars lined up every nite for gear I even used the next doors garden for my boat and 2 cars .the 4 neighbours were fine about it I did of jobs for them and lent them carpet cleaners and wallpaper strippers and stuff for nothing where I live now I have no neighbours apart from one and he don't mind what I do if I was in the estate it would only take a day for someone to moan cos most are stuck up nothings and think they are posh

I had awful neighbours for many years - that is why I now live in the middle of nowhere. The sheep never complain! Trouble is the nearest shop is 14 miles away!

One thing about planning that may be worth looking into is "established use". I'm not sure of the details but it goes something like if premises have been used for a purpose without planning permission for a period of time then PP is automatically granted. I've probably over-simplified it, but try Googling it.

Diplomacy always wins, also costs nothing. Well worth a visit to the nimby's and explain what you are doing, the last thing you want or need is the council on your case or a noise abaitment order.

A neighbour I had many years ago actually wanted me to park on his drive as he'd given up driving and felt he was less likely to be burgled if there was a car parked there every evening/night, since it suited me as it saved doing the "Butterflies" car shuffle I obliged. Result everybody happy.

I usually park my car in a neighbour's drive when he goes on holiday for the same reason.

My neighbour parks on our drive when we are away, their space is tight & if we are away in the camper van, it's fairly obvious we are out. Next door uses our space & hopfully it looks like someone else is in. That assumes that whoever is poking around doesn't recognise next doors car though.
