No water at house but good pressure at the main. Ideas??

This was about 9am. The other half was up a lot earlier and said it was fine when she got up.

I'm puzzled [happens quite a lot...]. Did anything [external work-wise] happen in the intervening period, or do you reckon she only used enough water to empty/reduce pressure in the supply pipe(s)?

This puzzled me initially but I calculated a mile of 25mm pipe would hold 850ish litres so I think could have supplied us (at poor pressure) for some time?? It comes down quite a hill so that would help with pressure even with no/poor connection at the main?

A quick update.... no answer on the phone from the gas company so the other half tried Facebook. Got a phone call very quickly from a helpful chap. He rang the team working in the site and the long and short of it is they know they’d gone through three pipes. They reconnected two and capped the third as they thought it was unused! They’ve sent a team now to fix it. We’re in Cornwall, the team is coming from Swansea!

Nice one.... at last! Good old gas board. All these modern systems to detect pipes and they still do it. I could not find the stop cock to my house in the mains supply off my property. The semi attached to me has one outside his gate on the pavement and there is a pipe that seems to go to my property. I had the water board bloke out who could not find it so they sent the elderlyish chap who finds the cocks nobody else can. He was using all kinds of tools and tricks and in the end after a hour or so he gave up saying I must not have one! He tried turning the tap off next door thinking that it controlled both houses but it did not! Am I supposed to have a stop tap in case the bit of pipe run to my house fractures and that bit of pipe is down to me to fix and should I insist that the water board fits one for me?

@p0689109 You ought to be able to isolate your mains supply in case of leaks/bursts inside the property - just consider the potential.

That is my point. I was a bit surprised when the old wizard of off cocks could not find it and then did nothing about it like informing the water company. Thing is have they to provide one by law or is it just a good idea?

just by a tap that i posted earlyer in the thread turn off the water and fit one of them takes 20 mins but add the time for the walk to the mains tap

That is the point I cannot turn off the water pre house as I do not have a tap. I have one inside the house to isolate the house but non between the house and the suppliers feed which they should have fitted!

Ring your supplier up - they will come out and fit one on the boundary FOC.

We used to fit a lot of new valves - quite often when the footpath is resurfaced the box lid would get lost, and the valve pit filled in and tarmaced over. Sometimes you would get lucky and dig down and find it, so just fit a new cover. Sometimes you would have to get wet.

SOo... thanks for all the advice. At about 3pm three welsh chaps arrived and dug a big hole. It turned out there were three pipes coming from the meters and four where they went through the pipes. They’d joined our supply up to a disused pipe and buried us! All fixed now though and I got to meet a number of the ‘new’ (in the last 6 months neighbours)!

Lots of dirty water ran through, but I turned the house off and got most of this out of the outside taps that are before the house first so hopefully not too much crud in the house systems.

I’m looking forward to a shower! Washing with water butt water was fine but seems a bit odd!!

welderpaul I had the suppliers top cock finder here and he never mentioned or reported the missing valve so I will not hold my breath but will try again.

As with all things these days success is governed by the ability/luck of of finding the right person to talk to. If you hadn't got through to the team involved you would have been arguing this for days.Glad it's sorted.
