As the title says so here goes:

I've got a VeeDub camper with an external camping gas bottle fitted (with gas in it), the van needs a couple of patch repairs inside well away from the bottle, so the question is, is it safe to MIG weld the van with the bottle attached?

I'm sure it is as long as the bottle does not get hot, or there is any chance of an ignition source getting into it but i do have a little niggling thought that it could be dodgy.

Any thoughts???

I'd remove the bottle before welding. There's always a chance you'll set the van on fire while welding and the fire brigade won't put it out if there's a gas bottle in there. Bottle should be quick enough to remove.

Fair point, I had not thought about that scenario, I was more concerned about the actual risk of welding with a bottle fitted.

turn on gas as normal and light a burner then turn off bottle and let burner go out, disconnect bottle and remove well away in a ventilated area, this ensures no gas is left in pipework also never assume that by turning the bottle off only stops any gas coming out of it, We were told on on my corgi exam that 1 in every 10 bottles "let by", this is tested for as part of a gas tightness test as it will mask any possible leak.
