no name MIG M5 tips

Gifted 185A no name mig, works as it should, however, the tip sits so far back in the shroud the wire curls almost to the shroud opening. Tips are M5 thread and searching for a longer replacement only turns up the fitted one at 18mm long whereas I guess the tip needs to be about 25mm long to fall just short of the shroud end.
Anyone know of a suitable replacement part or source?
Failing that, an option would be to cut down the shroud and swage the end a little, a right ball ache, as it came with 4 as well as a spot welding one.

If I remember correctly I had a similar problem with a Clarke welder once. It had m5 tips and you could get a 38mm or a 45mm long shroud for it. might be able to get a shorter shroud instead of a longer tip.

Does the shroud screw on with an 8mm thread. I think that was what the Clarke had.

I thought they just push and twisted on and off but it sounds like the shrouds are too long perhaps

Just checked the Clarke 150TE Turbo that we have at work and the shroud definitely screws on. Just went through a box of bits for it and I have 38mm and 45mm shrouds for it.

From memory my old Migmate had a lock nut behind the shroud to set its position in relation to to tip. I have not had the original torch for many years so can not check or take pictures.

M5 x 18mm is standard tip size for an MB14 torch.
As you will be getting through a lot more tips than shrouds I would think sticking with those tips and getting new shrouds will save you money.
If the welder has a euro fitting then it would be worth getting a more common MB15 torch if you are planning in doing a fair bit of welding as the consumables work out cheaper.

My Murex torch had unobtainable shrouds. We got by with a bit of copper pipe taped in place; yep it used to slide off as it got hot.
We altered the torch to take the cheapest common part on the shelf in the welding shop, I think it was as simple as drilling
out a tufnol bit the shround goes on from another torch, then fitting the modded tufnol bit and a nice new shroud.

maybe should have mentioned that the shrouds measure in at 37mm and are 8mm thread, and have not seen any shorter

Have you got a tap & die set? Maybe make up a little copper or brass extension .

That gave me an idea.
Back from the workshop and the tip is now 2mm short of the shroud edge. Thank you ZX9.
Ran an 8mm tap through the shroud to make sure there is no end stop on the thread.
Cut back insulator on torch neck, filed a bit of a taper lead in on the neck and ran a die down a good 4 extra turns and voilà. Might just need take a mm or 2 off the shroud, anybody tell me the optimum axial length between end of torch tip to shroud end. TIA.

A binzel MB15 comes supplied with the shroud about 2mm proud of the end of the tip
