'no more nails' onto gloss painted surface?

Hi all, I've been making a shop sign, the surface of which has been glossed. I now need to attach lettering made from 4mm exterior ply, cut using a scroll saw, there is negligible weight to them. The backs of the letters are unpainted.

So, will a quality exterior 'no more nails' type adhesive be ok or should I be using something else?

I'm afraid to use panel pins and find I split the lettering. It has taken too long already, don't want to be making replacement bits.

lightly sand it first, or use a good double sided tape

If there's little weight in the letters then you should be fine (assuming underlying gloss was keyed between coats).

Gripfill is pretty tacky stuff. That or contact adhesive would be my first choice.

Well if there's hardly any weight to letters? then paint the sign again and paint the back of the letters,stick em in place and let dry,paint to paint is like an adhesive.

I would just use the paint but hardly any left and it's needed, and was mixed to order so don't want to buy more.

I'll probably just sand behind then use the no more nails. I'm just imagining these current windy conditions wreaking havoc!

What about using Yacht varnish as the adhesive? Would this affect the gloss negatively?

That no more nails isn't that waterproof esp if outside to prolonged wetness,where PU is

Double sided, closed cell foam tape would be perfect. Like the stuff used to stick badges etc on cars.

Should be able to get it from an automotive paint supplier.

If the ack of the letters are unpainted, I'd be more concerned about some moisture soaking in and negating whatever adhesive, (I'd just use standard wood glue, either the pre-mixed bottle stuff else the powder you mix with water, personally), you've used. That back layer will eventually peel away from either the rest of the ply else adhesive if it gets damp.

How big are these letters? I'm assuming fairly small if splitting is a concern. Might be a grandmother sucking eggs suggestion, but you do know that blunting the end of pins/nails is supposed to deter their splitting ability?

hindsight drilled and countersunk the letters and screwed them on, then filled and painted. still could be done if you have enough paint?
