Nissen huts making a comeback

I see the great grandson of Peter Nissen, who was the man who devised the Nissen-hut, is trying to get them to make a comeback. They have to be better than those rubbishy softwood garden sheds the big diy shops peddle.

Glad they are.

There was a time when they made a brief return with "ECO farmers".
You do see some Ex reserve stuff coming up on the market, but that is few and far now.

Mancave is a Nissen hut, 1942 ex war reserve.



And the stable block is another one but bigger with mezzanine floor above.

looking at the photo on the link, all I can think is that the new nissen hut looks very posh for a WW2 air raid bunker, although I think it would work better if it was burried

Quonset huts are on the go same idea but they just make them bigger.

I like them. I would have one but they cant be easy to build...I assume the corrugated iron has to be pre-shaped.

There used to be a firm that added Armour to Cars....at the time I visited it was mostly Omegas...it was near Dumfries and close by the Hunter Welly factory....anyway they had 2 absolutely massive Nissan Huts....Ive never seen any so big

Yeah i tried to bend corrugated around a length of old telegraph pole before, disaster, it kept kinking. You would need a set of large bending rolls.

I've seen some bending rollers that were shaped specifically for corrugated iron.



there was also a shear with the same shape on the blade.

Dunno, if you used ordinary rolls and went easy i would think you could do it. But i suppose during the war, it would be production conditions so the rolls would have to be corrugated too.

Ive heard it called 13/3 so I assume its a standard shape / width....I dont know what it means though...13 peaks or valleys and 3 overlaps I think.........I was considering it for my shed but Ive sort of decided on the bitumen version

They are famous.

They are now homes.
In the late 1970's and early 1980's one had a red light outside it's front door.

On Bear Isle land they had a whole town made form huts sent from Britain to Russia. I understand it was dismantled when Reagan came the president.

A friend of mine owns a profile sheet manufacturing /supply company. They have just fitted a new production line that makes the wavy tin sheets and another machine that rolls them to any radius that you want

I've got one for a wood store but it's a lot more robust than the new ones. very heavy sheeting with no inner frame. It's getting a bit saggy now and I've been pondering taking it down and putting it on two little walls so I stop clattering my head on the roof. It's only little.

I had some replacement sheets rolled recently and I was stiffed nearly £500 for six sheets. There was a set up fee of £150, they then added handling and carriage . I think I only paid £750 inc delivery for the whole building forty years ago.

To me they do look quite funky, but they're smaller than the equivalent size shed and seem to cost a lot more.

I think it was elephant iron they used in the old ones. Very heavy gauge steel used.
