Nissan X-trail - what do the group think?

Id disagree about the laguna. I had 2, the first from new i put 325000 miles on it with only expected servicing, the second i only put 50k on but when i scrapped it it had 198000 on it... that had a bit more work (injectors) but hardly unexpected. Neither had any electrical issues and both were on their original gearbox and turbo.

We tend to fit a tow bar on the front if it is required. This is my Land Rover 90 with additional tow bar fitted for shunting trailers etc.

Had an xtrail manual was OK but eventually failed for rust. No-one mentioned them yet but have had an xc90 diesel auto for a few years now no tow bar, bit heavy but a good solid reliable drive, over 130k miles likes to drink but don't do that many miles now so ok.

I always assumed when I saw a L R fitted with one in that position it was purely for the amusement of the occupants when a pedestrian attempts to nip across the road when the traffic has stopped.

I used mine when I did rally recovery, I could hitch the car trailer onto it then use my winch to pull the dead car (or remains of) onto the trailer.

I did try to rip the side out of a Ford in Walsall when a lady thought she had enough room to pull out in front of me, I was gutted by the damage, it had cracked the 99p plastic towball cover

You can just about make it out to the side of the winch fairlead with a matching jaws hitch the other side.

I had 3 Nissan Sunny motors way back (an estate, a van and a saloon) and they were unremarkable but reliable and trustworthy.
Renault since say the infamous Laguna fusebox-festival dismal reliability Heap (their car offerings not commercial) I'd not have faith or money invested in.

When did Nissan tie-up with Renault? For me the cut-off point for Nissan ownership would be pre-Renault (generally I subscribe to the "buy French cheese, buy French Wine, don't buy French cars" club).

Google says tie up date was from 1999, I knew it was a while back but did not realise it was that long back.

The m9r engine in them xtrails from 2007 are scrap. The engines second hand are very scarce due to blowing up and spinning crank bearings etc.
The first xtrails were brilliant. Good mpg, good towing and excellent 4wd system. They also had a throttle potentiometer. It was easily fixed and just needed the contacts cleaned in it.
Unfortunately the first xtrail up to 2007 now are mostly rotten. Had one for years, I wouldn't touch the next one.
Honda crvs are good but won't tow much.
Toyota rav engine gives trouble.
Freelander 2 is having rot problems too with subframes.
My choice would be ford kuga or xc60 if you wanted manual or xc90 if you wanted auto.

I think the kuga platform is smaller and used by mazda cx7 and maybe volvo s40.
I think the xc60 platform is based on the mondeo, s max, galaxy etc. I think landrover use it as well.

My wife has the Kuga, it replaced the Koleos. I did find an auto Kuga with a tow bar but it was £6800 that is way above my budget. I only need a 2 tonne towing capacity and the Kuga is 2.1t so fits the bill, they are just more than I want to spend.

I wouldn't recommend an automatic ford. Their autos give trouble

Rather than trying to find a car with a towbar just pay a local towbar fitter to do it

We used to get them in for customers cars as we were too busy but wasn’t more than £300 a time fitted with warranty

To buy and have it fitted is £600 from the online quotes I have had. That pushes the budget down by the same amount as I have a finite amount I want to spend.
It also has to be fairly close for logistical reasons so my choice is even smaller.
I can wait to get something suitable as I know if I make a hasty purchase I will regret it
I should not have sold the Rangie in the first place, a lovely V8 petrol P38 auto.
I really don't do cars except for the 90 as that is a big meccano set

The 90 the engine went into only needed half shafts and wheel bearings

I have found a petrol version! If I am back on my feet Friday (which is looking very likely) I am going to see it. A lot cheaper but does have the aforementioned rust issues. It only has to last a couple of years and it has a towbar fitted
