Also another reason I weld them straight off it gives something a little softer to put the drift against, especially on hubs where there is an inside shoulder that the bearing is pressed up to and nowhere to drift against.

Done them this way for years It has never failed yet
Quick with no damage
I have seen big bits of steel straightened with well placed weld beads

i agree that weld does help when you can hit something against it if you couldnt find anything round and large enough lucky it was a strong enough crook lock and gearstick lock kinda did the trick if not it would have been the hammer and chisel to drift it out using the weld as a key point

also using ff with java and adobe flash but my firewall allows it i just dont allow it to install on its own

I have cold chisels pre ground concave on oneside, convex on the other for different dia bearing in varying sizes sat in my toolbox ready .

There is the freelander one from tonight that is still warm!!on the left and a merc atego one with a mug of coffee----- that is still hot! the coffee btw I stopped working at 22.30 -------for comparison.

i allways weld bearings out, some hubs just arnt easy to press on at all. good ring of weld and the bearing often just falls out

That's a neat idea, I may have to try that myself.
