I don't usually do it but the option of 60 hours at double time is nice lol

Permanent nightshift here. 12 hr shifts.

Wasn't that keen at first but 5 years later and I wouldn't be keen to change now!

On holiday now though.

If I could have worked in my nightshirt I might have got on better with them. I worked them for years days, nights, afters and never liked them. By the end of the week I was like a bear with a sore head and it took me all weekend to recover from them. I never had a problem sleeping though.

Used to work 'continental' shifts, 12 hour shifts were too long especially nights at the weekend. Was upsetting to the system too, e.g.eating at different times of the day during the week etc. Did it for 4 years.

Whenever I went to the toilet on nights I used to think thank goodness I wasn't at home in bed

I did permanent nights for 3 years.
Brilliant! Loved it.
Upsides: 1.5x salary for 0.6x work
Only four commutes.
No gaffers/politics.
Getting up at 4 in the afternoon still felt *naughty*
Taking a fortnight off for a holiday, and driving overnight whilst kids sleep means an extra day on the beach.
Holiday in Oz? Jetlag?!!! Pah. I speet on your jetlag.

Downsides: couple of beers after work, and walking kids to school half cut at 9am causes tongues to wag
Trying to adjust to days at weekend means falling asleep at 4pm Sunday afternoon (stood up, leaning against a sheet of plywood once) then sleeping through until 4pm Monday afternoon ( no different to clubbing til 6am for day walkers tho...)

If you get ill, and phone in three hours before your shift starts, you're likely to be told there's no cover.
(Spent a night wrapped in three lab coats, curled up near a radiator shivering like a shi... Erm
... *shivering* dog with gastric enteritis.

Conclusion:
Given a choice, I'd do it again tonight!
Permanent nights tho. Not shifts. Never again for shifts.

My Dad worked permanent nights for 25 years - said he'd tried the split(?) shifts when the Co [CPT, Fraserburgh] first introduced them but could never establish regular sleep patterns, so opted for f/time nights.

Did it improve his wages etc? No idea, kids never asked those sorts of things in those days.....

I never had any trouble sleeping on nights, just hated them by the end of the week. When we did 12 hour nights my wife could vacuum all the upstairs and I never woke up. We were on 6pm to 6am and she went out with the kids once and came in at 5.30 pm and I had to get something to eat and dash off to work I hadn't woken up all day.

Our nightshift week is 4 x 9 hours with 33% shift allowance, so more pennies and less commutes than the day shifts

I did day work and night time and weekend callouts for 15 years and I got a lot. just mainly daytime now

It's the running *towards* burning buildings that would put me off that job.

I do three on three off alternating between nights and days 12hr shifts. Been doing this for 20 years and certainly couldn't go back to 'normal' working, the time off during the week, you can't put a price on.

Its the time off during the week. ^ what @Dodge20 said. I work 35hrs over 4 days, it changes everything for me.

only shift i liked was backshift, 4pm till midnight. great shift, quiet, less managers sticking their oar in and you could get on and do stuff. glad i left before the co went to 4 on 4 off, days and nights, dont think i could adjust my sleep pattern quick enough
