Yea something has blued there due to heat and that means no oil and that means as you say bearings in headstock starved of oil...make a good boat anchor

Take more than @spencer 427 and a needle file to fix it.

there is a flat top student dumped in a field near me, no vehicle access though, might go and pinch the motor, someone has had the cross slide screw....

Don't know about Trying @zx9, a machine out of school or college ? you despair someone must have heard it's not as it was once
Watched a student run the tool post into the chuck just to see what happened that resulted in the machine workshop being disbanded
