I think that we need to be totally clear:
This is a demonstration of what NOT to do.

This is a potentially lethal situation.

The fuse is there for a purpose - and so is the plug cover, and must be replaced like for like.

That said, it's a crazy picture, I bet it was a qualified electrician that did it! Familiarity breeding contempt and all that.

That's a bit extravagant. A 4" nail would work just as well.

Did you about hear the Darwin Award finalist from redneck territory? The story goes that his elderly pick-up kept blowing the same fuse and he decided to stick a .22 cartridge in the fuse box instead. It worked ok except that the extra current flowing through the fuse (cartridge) heated the cartridge up, it went off and shot him in the knackers.

I've always found just wrapping the dead fuse with tin foil works fine - you can put the plug cover back on and no-one knows

Hi,

many years ago working at the amusement arcade in Cleethorpes we had a brand new Pin-Table that kept blowing fuses. We had the service manual, diagrams, everything we needed but couldn't figure it out. So the boss wrapped the fuse in silver foil and about 30 seconds later the offending relay went 'phut' and the wisp of smoke identified it!

It can be a reliable fault-finding technique but you must remember to remove the foil when you've finished.

Soldering wire would probably work as a good fuse substitute. I'll not be trying it though.

Check that again, they did actually get it to work, problem was;

1) Finding a car that had a glass fuse fusebox.
2) Under normal circumstances the bullet didn't get hot enough, but if it the circuit was shorted it would actually heat the cartridge enough to make it fire.

You hear these things, but as someone with considerable shooting experience and ammunition loading skills, I do wonder if the stories get embellished over time. I'm sure that you could get a .22 to go off at some point, but the thing is, that velocity etc is developed in the barrel. Where the gases can just escape, the bullet would have no direction or real energy behind it; enough to hurt, maybe, but I doubt it would have fatal capacity. Still, the story wouldn't be half as funny if it had hit him in, say, the shin.
I'm still laughing. We had a contractor do this with a nail wrapped in foil. It tripped half the factory. When we challenged all the contractors, no-one owned up, so we got ourselves a nice welder for nothing. Yes, we put a fuse in. We needed the nail...
