Just started working with this guy whos been to college for one year to get mig,tig,mma and fab certs....notice the ppe...safety of what he has learnt..hoody...trainers...tracky bottoms...stood on an electrical cable...?really?

I know times have changed but I did a four year apprenticeship and picked up my indenture papers, these days people wonder why they struggle after a year at college, this picture tells a story of what many think is acceptable!!!

I must add, not all are like this, i just think the old apprentice scheme was far superior, I also came out of it with a HNC.

All the guys at our place and our sister company do a four year apprenticeship to NVQ Level 3. College is where bad habits are picked up, it's down to us in the workplace to get them in line when they're mucking about.

With most jobs the required school certifications are the tickets to get your first job(s) where you will then actually learn what the hell you need to learn.

Certainly the way it was diving in the oil field!

I think you are responsible for him because you see what he's doing wrong and then it does not indicate the dangers .
when you had your first job you did not know everything in one day .

Irrespective of what 'trade training' he has had, he obviously needs to be reminded of what is expected of him from a health and safety aspect. That's everyone's responsibility, and the bosses responsibility to provide him with whatever PPE he needs.
He'll learn pretty quick that the clothes he is wearing won't last long without a pair of overalls over the top.

Have to agree with W/Paul. Both employee/employer are responsible, if the chit hits the fan, both would not have a leg to stand on at court or with HSE!

We had a few guys that were often caught out on site wearing trainers instead of safety boots (which are supplied free)
After constant warnings the only way it seems to have stopped is by a warning from the bosses that anyone caught we sent home without pay for the day.

That guy will hopefully wear sensible work clothes when he's fed up with getting burnt?

I did point out the obvious but got attitude because I learnt my trade on the job by good blokes and havnt got paper work so he ignored me which is why I took the photo.its a classic not to do you see on induction videos for large companies.

Jeez. I'm a hobbyist with probably a total of three hours welding under my belt at home (following my evening classes).

During that time I "just did a quick weld" wearing my jeans and hoodie and burned myself on the calf and arm. One and only time.
Next time, I was about to spark up and thought "oh wait - run back into the house and get your nomex overalls on".

So I guess there is an element of self-selection in play here - once he's burned himself once (maybe twice, if he's dim) then he'll learn.

I do agree with the folks on here who wonder why he was allowed to work like that, though.

I have never worked out why people do that, you ruin your clothes and put yourself in danger.
I liked the approach of an old safety officer who said "health and safety is so that you come back alive from work each day and can get on with your life"

If you follow proper procedures, it is a perfectly safe practice!

nothing wrong with cutting open gas bottles, provided it is done properly and safely, which is the point illustrated by the pic, there is nothing wrong with what he is doing (the welding) it is the way he is going about it (dressed in clothes that catch light easily) that is being spoken about.

I am mainly a hobbyist welder at home, although I do weld in work, and also weld a few bits up for some of my customers, and I now always wear good thick flame retardant overalls as after being burnt through my clothing more than once I have seen the light, as will this lad after the first few little scars have healed

When i worked on the bins for a while, on my first day the 3 other guys in my waggon couldnt get out the cab at break time because the H&S dude was there and they all had trainers on! (two of them also had shorts on) You should have seen the looks i got when I declared as I actually had my steelies on that I was going in to the canteen

maybe that is the new line of urban safety wear, lol!!

what i recon does not help is the amount of programs on sky about building and fabricating cars bikes ect i have noticed in most of programs there wearing no real safety wear in some cases shorts and t shirt lol!!
