Going to try and weld and weekend ,when i get some steel to practice on.Did a little many years ago,but it was not very good.My problem is seeing,soon as you put mask on its pitch black until start welding.When you start welding you only see the weld glare,so i get lost.Any tips please.

buy one of the m batary oparated light to dark ones its the best one i brought

Try an auto helmet if you can. The lense is light reactive so you can see through it till you strike the arc.

Do these still let you see the working area when welding,or is it the same as a hand held mask when welding.

When welding they darken. Some, like the one in the link, can be adjusted to different shades depending on what suits you and your work.
Try lighting the area with a worklight or similar, and you can also mark the join line with chalk to make it easier to see.
Really it's mostly down to practice.

Can you all suggest a good brand of auto darkening helmets to buy - does the brand really matter or are they just trying to get more $$$ out of me?
