Newbie Tig

Morning all,

I am thinking of buying a Tig welder, Im looking at going into to world of car modifications and would love to be able to make Stainless steel exhaust ect. I can use a Mig alright but would love to give it a go using a Tig on Ali and SS. I have been looking and reading up about a few, but its always best to get advise from people in the know. I do not have a Limit as such, but the more expensive, the longer it will take for me to get one. I am wondering wether 160A would be enough for what i want to do. what kind of stainless steel and Ali thickness would I be able to weld?

All advise is appreciated, previous experience and guidence on different welders would really help.

Hi, I bought an r-tech 201 in august last year and have been really pleased with it, been using it for work welding 10mm ali with some preheat and for my c/g level 2 ali as the college only has limited number of ac sets. Another guy on the course has the older version of the same welder and it has not given any problems. Went up to r-tech to check them out before I bought mine as I wanted to be sure the support was there. Only thing I would comment on is that the torch is a bit big and if you were doing lots of thin tube work you might want a smaller one as an extra. See if they have a shop soiled machine, full warranty and I got mine less the vat!
