Newbie please help!

Hi all, newbie alert! Hope someone can gove me some advice please.

I can Arc & Mig weld good, but I have always be interested in Tig, I would like to be able to do quality pipework etc, BUT I have never tig'ed in my life.

What I have done is bought a Tig Inverter on ebay but its missing nozles and needs a gas bottle.

Are the nozles all interchangeable?
How much are they and where is the best place to buy?
Also if I test this as an arc welder and it works is this a good indication that the Tig side of it is ok?
To use it as an arc is it just the same as a normal arc welder?
Can anyone tell me any info on the one I have just bought?

I couldnt get the item up when you say nozzles which part(s) of the torch do you think your missing?
I would go to a good welding supplys shop for you collets shrouds tungstens, there is an infante choice of sizes and types and if its your first tig then your want some help.
Yes if it arcs then chances are power supply is good but is not a sign that HF pre slope post slop pulse or other functions work.

Before I go and spend money on renting a bottle etc can I just get the bits for the tig and see if it arcs up? Also the guy I bought it off did not have a clue about it, I have tested it as an arc and welds fine, BUT it has 3 settings, 1 for arc 1 for tig and then another on the same knob, any ideas what the other one could be, also has another knob on the right hand side, any ideas on that one. I dont even know if its scratch or HF. Sure someone hear may be able to shine some light on this.

The leftmost position looks like pulsed TIG mode.

The switch on the right switches between the current setting on the unit and a remote footpedal.

It looks like it was made by Lincoln electric. Find the model code number and see if you can get a manual for it: http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Catalog/lecooperatorsmanualsearch.asp

That would give you info on the torch parts.

Thanks for that, so it looks like its a HF not Scratch, I may have to get a footpedal then. Just need to work out what I have.

Been on lincoln web site and carn't find any info on this one. I have taken a couple of pics myself and numbered up the bits I don't understand.

Number 1: It has Arc & Tig settings but also another, what is it and how would I use this setting?

Number 2: It hsa a setting for the amps but also can be set for what looks to be a foot pedal / HF, but I thought running in tig mode you would still need to set the amps, any ideas?

Number 3: is this the plug for a foot pedlal / HF, if so is it a standard fitment, it needs 4 pin conector, if so how much are these to buy?

Hear is a pic of the tig gun, it has writern on it " 150amp CK150 UNFLEX " anyone know what type it is and what parts are missing from the pic. It also has a triger/button, I take it this is for the gas to come through?

As I have said I have never tig'ed before and am a little lost with what I have or what type I got, I would be very greatfull for someone to have a look at the pics and give me a general explanation on the settings and the aplications.

I have just been on the phone to Lincoln and hopefully they are sending me a manuel, he told me its a touch tig and can work without a pedal. Sure someone hear will enlighten me.

1 it could be pulse or gouge setting,
2 no if you want set amps then turn the switch one way if your switched to footpedal it will all be on that.
3 in my book iv never found 2 plugs wired the same on tig but weldequip is proberbly the best to ask.
4 looks like your just missing ceramics and tungstens.

unlikely to be pulse on a simple machine should think it could well be gougeing mode, my big tig has it on the mode selector, gouge is simply to use for gougeing rods bit like gas cutting but with arc.

Got the bits for the tig torch, pluged it all in and canot get it to arc, tryed it on pulse mode still the same, works great as an arc welder but nothing as a tig, the only thing I have not got is gas but all I am trying to to is see if it works before I commit to buying gas but this should not stop it working. Any Ideas?

Anyone hear in the South Wales area that may what to have a look?

If it works as arc, it should work as TIG.

Are you sure it is not scratch start?

According to the manuel its a touch tig, I have tryed scratch, the only thing I can think of is maybe a faulty switch on the torch. As per the instructions made contact pressed the switch and nothing, even at the same time scraching it and moving it round, gone back and for using the stick/arc side and that welds realy nice/smooth Hope the welder is ok, dont want to look like a fool cause Ive bought a dud.

sounds like the welders ok, if it arcs then chances are it will tig being a simple machine. I would test the torch first the water cooled are always giveing me grief.

The torch is an air cooled, equivelent to a wp17, it must be the switch, will get 5 mins to do a continuity on it tomorow.

Just a quick question, are all the conectors the same for the tig torch to the tig welder?

Tested the switch, it works, you can hear a click on the switch but have to wait a short while to press it again to hear another click, but still no arc from the tig torch.

I have had a look inside and nothing looks burnt out on the PCB etc.

Could it be that it won't arc because there is some kind of safty feature because I have not got a gas bottle attached?

Does anyone know of somewhere in South Wales that can repair tig welders, how much usuraly is it to have one looked at.

Did you say it had HF if it has chances are it will have a gap to adjust most old machines did, No cant imagine theres a pressure check on the machine. To look at it shouldnt cost you a fortune the guy i use is about £30 for a look but be warned you could soon get into £££ if theres much wrong a PCB repair seems to start at about £200 these days.
