Sorry to bring this one up again, but I've decided TIG is definately the answer to the question "what welder for a sculptor". I have an argument too. Before I start the argument, gas welding is the other answer. I understand it's much like TIG but more tricky, but it does have the advantage of making you look really cool when you've figured out how to use it.
Having half figured out TIG at the weekend after only 3 days learning spread over as many months, I've been thinking about it all week. I've got warm happy feelings, and if I were artistic in any way I feel this would inspire me to knock up something ground breakingly good.
That's about as far as my argument goes, but it's possible that further breakthroughs in this welding process might inspire in a similar way. In short, it's possible that learning TIG might just provide the inspiration to make cool new sculptures.
