Newbie help! Weld looks like chicken poo!!!

Hi i have brought a big welder a few months ago and had a look through this site, for help on basically how to weld. Anyway i have a migmate 130 turbo, and when i weld, the the finished product always seems to to come not very smooth and looks a bit like chicken poo lol sorry thats the best way i could describe it. How can i stop this happening or is this normal?

Sorry but i have already got the grinder out already and smoothed it all over! its basically like loads of little lumps of chicken poo lol sorry but thats the best way that i can describe it. The welds are strong but it looks nothing like the welds that i see on here, its not a smooth thing its just very lumpy... it doesnt splatter at all but the weld itself it very messy.

And follow the guides. You cant learn to weld in an afternoon, I spent a whole year in training to weld, and I still consider myself a learner

Yea i understand the practice thing but i was just wondering if anyone could tell me what i was doing wrong so i can try and correct it. Any help would be great.

Just about impossible to diagnose a fault without seeing some piccies. Failing wire speed or power setting I'd be guessing torch position or movement, or perhaps gas or metal preperation.

Try doing some practice welds and photograph them. Following the set up sequence in the tutorial might rule out a few things.

Why don't you weld some scraps and take some pics.... include the settings on the machine and flow settings for the gas as well as the type of shielding gas. Like Malcolm says.... "Just about impossible to diagnose a fault without seeing some piccies"

I hate to say this but, it is a real possibility that its just the SIP shouting out to be put to rest (permanently). My old SIP is now resting peacefully in the bottom of the Swanley tip.


Without any images I can only guess that something is badly worn out.

Should give it a bit of a chance - this one is brand new.

Anyone else throwing away an old SIP I'll have it! Fancy a fiddle with one.
