Too much rust!

Evening all,
Firstly, great site - it's helped so much already before I've even really got started.
Anyway, the reason I'm here is because I've got a rusty Beetle (well, 3 to be honest) which needs welding to pass the MoT... And, rather than pay someone else to do it I thought I'd get into the spirit of things and get the equipment and do it myself!
So, I've bought a Clarke 135TE which should be good enough, and a load of .9mm steel from my local Metal Supermarket (about 4 sq ft for a fiver!)!
Anyway, I've never welded before - I'm a computer programmer so about as mechanically minded as a tomato...
About two weeks ago I thought I'd have a test welding session for the first time ever...
This is what I came up with...
Ok, not great, but the bloke at the local aircooled specialist said that would be good enough to do a bodgit and scarper!
I'm getting closer to welding up the car now I've done the other mechanical bits required for the MoT so I thought I'd have a final test session this evening...
Forgive the HUGE blow-through - was intentionally seeing what I could get away with...
Total welding experience - around 20 minutes and this is all on .9mm
Comments and suggestions for improvement both valued and welcome - the welds in the pictures were done with the cannister of CO2 that came with the welder, I have an Argon/CO2 mix ready for when I do the car.
Cheers
Nick
