yes you can but it will rust and might fail.
Well, sort of!
If you were to use your normal mild steel wire, the weld itself wouldn't be stainless - so would be prone to rust.
But if you were to use a reel of stainless wire, (using Argon for shielding) I think you'll be just fine!

I've welded stainless exhausts with normal mig wire and co2. They've lasted well over a year and passed a couple of MOTs.
what i mean by that is ive been told that i can weld stainless steel with normal wire and co2 im not after a fancy weld but i want it to hold lol

It can be done, but with regards of whether it should be done is more the case in point.
You really have to look at what the purpose of the weld is, If it were anything that was critical do it the proper way. If your putting a spot of weld on your gate bolt I don't really see the issue of using a M/S setup.
What is the purpose of your S/S stuff?
