That's a very neat looking burner Striker, what's the smoke like? I keep thinking about a J tube rocket heater for the workshop but my neighbours washing line is a bit close and always seems to be full . There's plenty shown on tinternet claiming no smoke and low temperature flue emmisions but I've not seen one in use so decided to have an experiment last night just to see what it was all about.
Armed with some 50mm box secton (all I had) and a 24 bottle Budweiser development inducement kit I knocked up the 12" x 8" shape below to try both the L shape rocket stove and a J tube by blocking either inlet off to see what the burn and flow was like. Sat on a couple of fire bricks it worked better than I expected for it's size so I ended up welding this into a 7kg gas bottle to try an uninsulated rocket heater with a 30" 50mm box section flue. This worked but struggled getting hot enough to burn without smoke as the draw was poor but adding compressed air to speed up the burn pushed the temperature at the top of the gas cylinder over 300°c and the smoke turned to steam with an outlet temperature around 35°c. Using a hot air gun as a flue extractor kept the temperature up too and once removed it would stay at 200°c provided the fire was kept fed but once the fire died down it needed supercharging each time to get the temperature back up. The Budweiser ran low at this point so development ceased.
Thanks Wallace.. I originally intended to make a j tube rocket stove but after loads of research decided a steel j tube just wouldn't last..
This one only took a day to make, burns with absolutely zero smoke after only a couple of minutes...these don't burn with low flue temperatures though..
I have been adjusting the heat output today by sliding a steel plate over the feed tube. It burns so much hotter with some restriction but I think this is because I have a tall well insulated chimney that draws too well in my workshop.
If I had my way I would take out our £1200 house stove and build another for in there..but the Mrs likes watching the flames through the glass...so over ruled on that one.
