New Welders Apprentice

Hi All ,the tin worm has got to the bulkhead on my landrover, I have the following facilities ,garage ,SIP mig ,gas ,wire ,grinder auto welding mask ,metal, die grinder ,the welding job is small totalling 6 ins of weld,what I dont have is the nescessary skillls or the confidence,so is there anyone on the forum in or near the Medway towns who could guide my hand for half an hour in gluing the patch onto my landy?the work is at chest ht so no getting dirty and it is all prepped up in a nice warm garage with copious tea/coffee/beer available,its a bit cheeky I know but I dont know any car restoration enthusiasts in the area and I cant afford garage rates!any help advice welcome

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum, if it's the usual place of top corner near hinge you can get a repair panel, just remember to cover the windscreen before doing any grinding.

land rover bulkhead

Hi Thanks for replies,the repair i have to carry out is very small in 2 places 50 p size patches,i have ground away the rot and I am making a couple of patches with tabs on to give me summat to hold while welding,i have been practicing but the results are not good,the best weld seems to be the material of my fleece-- lots of perfectly fused material,I have access to a stick welder at work its an inverter type,would this be easier to use than the SIP? we also have thin mild steel welding rods about 1 mm dia would they be ok?thanks in advance for any help /advice

stick would be to harsh for the panel just try practicing a bit more. put a piece of copper behind the panel (squashed pipe) that acts as a heat sink and reduces the chance of blow through!
