the wifes old E46 beemer ime sure charges from the barrel and its a 2000 model so nothing new there
have you got all the master keys that the van had from new ?, reason i ask is insurance may ask for all the keys if your unlucky enough to have it nicked, you could have a fight on your hands with them specially if its loaded with your gear and/ or a customers if you can not produce all the keys

I attempted to have a key made for my Touareg, Locksmith tried 4 times to get the chip in the new key programmed, no luck, If it had worked price was £50-00, it should have opened the door using the key and started the engine, He gave me the number of a local car key specialist who said he could make a key to work for £60-00. or £130 for one that would do remote door operation as per VW key.
never occurred to me -good point,only got the 1 key,it does everything you'd expect.
If you have 2 programmed keys you can programme others to the ECU. It's the same system as Mazda use. If you only have one key then you're a bit stuck and a visit to the stealership will most probably be required.

What a rip-off, there will be ten times the electronics and plastic in a kids toy that costs a couple of quid.

FRom the point of view of the locksmith, has anyone ever priced the kit to code keys - when you do, you will understand the price.

After I found my van key I went to a couple of locksmiths to get a duplicate and was told they could only do it from the master key. This is supposed to be kept safe and not used other than emergency as manufacturers supply 2 "ordinary" keys for everyday use. Locksmiths couldn't code a new key from these "ordinary" ones. I believe the master keys are often different colour identify them.

you think that's bad when fiat went on to the coded ecu keys if you lost the keys it was a new lock set and ecu about £800 at the time

Our car came with one key, I knew they could be pricey so it was the make or break wether we bought the car or not. The garage gave in and agreed to get us another key. We had to take the car to the main dealer, £350 for the key. Thank Christ I held my ground at the garage. I would ask the garage you bought it from to replace it.
