New use For Electrolysis

I discovered a handy way of cleaning up brake discs. The ones on a car I'm repairing were new but because the car was sitting so long they were badly rusted. I put one in my electrolysis tank overnight and it came out like new!

I've often used old discs as sacrificial electrodes but it never occurred to my to use the e-bath to clean them!

you know the ones on my car are a little rusty on the edge and centre.

fine on the braking surface and no wear lip yet.

i was thinking of doing this too but only got a bucket to use atm.
not built my tank yet.

but would mean leaving car for a day without brake discs.

would like to do the brake calipers too

Might be in Northern Ireland but the MOT rules change as too many garages were taking the pee and failing discs that were perfectly serviceable the local garage I take my MOT tests too complain about it as there hands are tied and cant fail disc unless there falling off.

Not quite accurate, disks corroded as to impair the braking function is an MOT failure.

Over here all the MOT testing centres are government run and do not carry out any car repairs, all they do is test vehicles. This means they stick fairly tightly to the rules but they do not fail cars in order to get themselves repair work!

Over here, if a brake disc shows rust on the braking surface they can fail the test.

No they can't. If they are then they are exceeding the remit and you can have formal compliant against them. The regulation states that it must IMPAIR the breaking performance.

Mine rusted inside an hour while my son took the wheel to repair a puncture...
