New TV hard drive/media server

For the first time in a good while we’ve bought something because we wanted it and didnt need it , in the form of a new telly.

Its an LG55CS, the picture and sound quality, but without adding a USB hard drive is fairly useless at watching live tv, as it cannot be paused for making a brew etc.

Im running the freeview box on it, a humax fvp-5000, as the way we watch tv is usually by recording series (aussie gold hunters, oak island, and other such obscurities), so am tending to view tv via this until i get a hard drive.

I have noticed however that on the “inputs” screen, the freeview box also shows up as a media server, if I go on this I can select and play recordings, albeit with a lot clunkier fast forward function than the freeview button.

I was wondering firstly if the tv can interface with the hard drive in the freeview box for pausing live tv etc, and secondly if I do need to purchase a hard drive does this mean I can record live tv etc and can do away with the freeview recorder ?

So read the instructions it should say what you need

With the prices now I'd be tempted to get a solid state drive rather than normal hard disk, much quicker to access and 1-2TB probably big enough, not too expensive.

My sony tv has a similar facility so I bought a external hard drive to record to it.
I found the interface fairly clunky, setting up a recording was similar to setting an old vhs, it wasn't just a 1 button press like your Humax box. If a program was running late starting it didn't know to change the recording time automatically, you had to do that manually.

The biggest issue was that if the tv was recording something you couldn't record a different channel with my humax recorder. I eventually repurposed the drive to backup the pc & stuck to recording on the Humax.

You may beable to connect the TV to the box if they both have the software programmed for network attached storage.
I doubt you'll be able to do it via USB.

I use a dune h1. 6 years still going strong.
A bit on the expensive side but worth it. If you have a load of DVDs you can just dump them to a drive. Plays iso.

Some 4k films are now 100gb each.
But for what he wants then use probably the best bet!

On my tv I just put a usb stick into the HDD slot to pause/record tv onto.
There is a network port that connects to the hub and will let me play back music/films stored on the nas drive I don't know if the tv could actually just be setup to record to the nas drive though?

Thanks. Like most modern appliances it didnt come with any. Presumably they will be buried in a website somewhere. I think Ill stick with the freeview box thanks all
