That exemption only applies to tractor drawn trailers. It does not apply to vehicle drawn trailers such as ifor williams livestock trailers towed behind land rovers or Jap pick ups etc. I looked into it quite a bit whilst still a cop working in a rural area to ensure I wasn't needlessly stopping farmers all the time.
have u ever finished a project yetcars narrow boats cruisers ect ect
OK, can you guys bring me up to speed regarding the current trailer regs please.
1) New regs came into play on 28 October 2012.
2) Any homebuilt trailer built after this date has to be inspected and approved before use on the road.
3) Any existing trailers that have been structural altered after this date have to be inspected.
4) Any existing trailers that have been dimensionally changed after this date have to be inspected.
5) Any structural repairs to an existing trailer after this date have to be inspected.
6) Inspection is similar to an SVA and is conducted at your local VOSA inspection station.
7) These are mandatory requirements which may result in prosecution if not adhered to.
8) If your trailer has been built/altered/structurally repaired after this date and has not been inspected and approved then your insurance policy is very likely void.
9) It is an offence to tow a trailer as above in an uninspected and approved condition on a public highway.
Out of curiosity how are demountable bodies affected?
N.B. bolt on, pinned on, twist lock.
I am assuming I can alter demountable bodies to my heart’s content, providing I do not alter the mounting points on the trailer chassis.
How can it be proved that a trailer wasn't built or altered before 28/10/2012 ?
only if u use parts of a new ish vehicle then it can be proved by ageIt's possibly a requirement to have a data plate stamped on them (which could say anything of course). But in reality there can't be any real way of proving anything because there isn't anything that can be shown to be new rather than old but good as new.
Tyres can be new, suspension could be new or reconditioned, metal/paintwork could be redone. Trailer could be old but kept in dry storage and thus be old but appearing new. Basically I don't see any way that anything could be proven for a home built trailer.
So now that we have discussed what is not enforceable in the real world, enforceable or not what are the actual new trailer building regulations?
