No...its like putting a earth clamp off your welder onto paint...needs paint stripper...acid...or fire

I tried that once before...

Took about three days to get it all cleaned up, and I've got a much bigger tank now. It did, albeit very slowly, remove the paint however.

I got a new belt for the pump today so I rebuilt it all, put a new motor in it and ground a couple of lathe tools.

The pump doesn't work though. I assume it needs priming, is there an easy way to do this?

Oh, and I gave up on stripping it, it seemed pointless so I've just left it as-is.

What type of pump is it ? Did you strip it and have a look at it ?

I don't know the name of it but it's like this, but with only 1 set of ports in the rotor and 1 piston rather than two.

I did strip it and it looks to be in good condition.

You can't beat the cheap old vane pump. But have you tried filling the outlet/hose of the pump with coolant ? Its strange though, most coolant pumps self prime as it might be a long time between jobs.

Most coolant pumps I've seen have an impeller below the water level so they stay constantly primed.

Yeah thats the way it is on the colchester, very clever design. But the pump is high up on the tom senior and if not primed, won't work.

I managed to make the pump work, I bodged up a thing to prime it by poring water in from the top with a valve so water wouldn't just spurt out the top when it starts pumping.


The top part is acting as a funnel. I'm going to redo it properly sometime soon, the valve is a steam valve with about a 4 mm hole through it which doesn't allow enough flow to work very will, but it proves that the pump works.

I need to sort out some better guarding too; unsurprisingly, squirting water at a spinning grinding wheel makes a bit of a mess.

indeed, i found that out when using coolant on the lathe.

it goes everywhere.
