Many thanks for the link. The manual is a handy reference for the bearings used and the other associated data. I still cant make head nor tail of the oil that is supposed to used for the gearbox. The manual seems to specify a 5°/50 oil. Do you think this is the same as a 5w/50 motor oil? The manual is old and I am not sure that they are quoting the same standards as modern car oils.

Wow, that is fantastic.

Looks in really nice condition too.

I've bought loads of things on ebay without any thought on how I'm going to get them home.

That is even worse when you arrive and find it's way bigger than you thought.

Me and mate and have a comedy thing where everything I seem to buy is near his house and vice versa.Problem is we live 150 miles a part

I have been educating myself on the internet this morning with regard to oil grades. The manual quotes the Engler scale which hasn't been used in years.

The required viscosity grade is 5° E/50°.

I will contact Morris to see what the modern equivalent is.
It is definitely nothing to do with motor oil grades that's for sure.

2,5E/50C is around an ISO VG 15 (Valacite #8)

The Kinematic scale which the present day ISO is taken from. The problem is that ISO 2, 10, and 22 are pretty much the standards for spindle oils now. They're usually rated for use by RPM range. The ISO 22 (Valacite#10) is good to about 3600 RPM, ISO 10 (Valacite#6) is good to about 6000 RPM. Those numbers are for continuous duty.
2,5E/50C = Valacite No10 or DTE 24in Mobil oil

wait a couple days i will have a day off soon and can give a quick call to the factory in Chech or Slovakia as i speak both of this languages and i can asked them directly saving you chance of damaging a gearbox with wrong oil.

I had a look on practical machinist this morning and there are a few threads relating to Engler. One of the threads states that "4.64 Engler is the mid-point of ISO-32" so I think this may be close to the grade of oil required.

I don't need to run the drill anytime soon so I will wait to see what the factory says.

For anyone still playing guess the weight of the drill, the manual states 400kg.

Spoked with factory TOODAY they said unfortunately ownership been changed and new owner hasn't kept all records from previous years.
But I posted couple threads on Eastern European forums and people there said you can use automatic gearbox oil. But it is up to you.

For the minute amount of time it'll be driven under load, I would think just about any decent quality oil would be fine. ATF sounds like a good idea.

I've put EP90 in my Progress, because I've got loads and 25 litres of the properstuff, Shell Vitrea Oil 69 equivalent will last me decades, longer than I'll last anyway.

I've had a bit of contact with Morris Lubricants and they were very helpful. I also had a further look at the Czech manual and noticed that J4 oil ( "j4 olej" in Czech) is actually recommended for the drill. I previously overlooked this as I didn't recognise it as an oil at all.



Anyway I googled "J4 olej" and there is a lot of info on this oil but it's all in Czech. Its a bearing oil from back in the day from that part of the world as far as I can tell. Goofle translate has turned out to be a very helpful tool

"Oil under the former designation OL-J4 is now replaced by the designation OL-46 and OL-J6 corresponds approximately to the new designation OL-68. I say approximately because the viscosity range of new oil is not exactly viskozitám grades older oils. In this case, the viscosity oils with a new designation is always on the low end viscosity oils with the old name. They are thus slightly "thinner". Thus, for older and already vyběhaných machines we recommend using the oil more viscous than one class would correspond to normal spreadsheet transfer between the oil. Thus, in case of older and worn out equipment with the above recommendation from oil producers, for example, you can use oil-J4 OL OL-68 and OL-J6 oil 0L-100."

There are a number of other forum discussions out there that seem to back this up also.

Morris lubricants also recommended ISO68 gear oil. I don't know if they ended up looking a the same places I did but they have come to the same conclusion. I will be buying some ISO68 gear oil from them in the near future once finances allow. The trouble with industrial oils is they tend to be sold in industrial quantities. Thanks to everyone for their help and interest.
