I recently nabbed a bargain on Ebay. Badly described with one tiny photo with little sense of scale showing and went for a song. I put in a cheeky bid without knowing quite what it was except that it looked like very good old drill and it was sold on my doorstep. There were hardly any bidders.
I turned up the next day with my brother to help me pick the drill up. I optimistically thought from the pictures it was about 200 kg and reckoned I might get it in the Focus with a bit of effort if it was dismantled. I was stupidly wrong. After the shock of viewing and seeing what I had bid on I liked what I saw and paid my money and agreed to pick up the next weekend when I was better prepared.
I turned up the next weekend with three people to help plus an engine crane, trolley, wooden boards, slings, tools, jacks, Landrover and trailer.
We were unable to get the drill wheeled out of the garage door as I wanted due to the clutter in the sellers' garage and we had to drag it over the threshold of the back door of the garage and onto on a hastily constructed ramp which was a bit worrying. The engine crane was indispensable for liftingnthe drill in the trailer. I vowed to never buy anything from Ebay again at this point due to the hassle and trouble I had put my friends to as I had called in a few favours to get the beast moved and it was touch and go as to whether the little trailer would take the weight of the beast.
I expected the motor to be 3 phase but it has already been replaced with a 3hp single phase motor which is a massive result. I have found a manual online and the drill originally came with a 2hp 3phase motor. I have wired the beast up and she runs. I need to wire a starter/safety switch and also get the quill back into the drill head. I have had a go at trying to get it back up there but it seems to engage with the teeth and then jam. It fell out when a family member of the previous seller was playing with quill lever and over extended it so it dropped out
I have put a can of beer in the pics for scale. Its a 440ml or 16 ounce can for Shenion and his American friends. The drill goes down to 71rpm and its a 20mm or 3/4 inch chuck with a MT3 taper. Needless to say I will be very pleased once it is all properly set up.
If anyone has any experience with this make of drill I would be very interested to hear from you. It is a TOS V20. Made in Czechoslovakia. Does anyone know what grade of oil should be in the gearbox? The oil is up to the correct level but I would like to change it as I have no idea when it was changed last.
